Bemboom comes to <strong>Creighton</strong> from Iowa Western CCwhere he hit .410 with 59 hits in his sophomore campaign.SwiftINFIELDERSThe Jays will have to replace half of their infield from a season ago, which finished tied for first in the nation with a .980 fielding percentage,led by graduated senior Ian Dike (.985).Playing the hot corner will be senior Jimmy Swift. Swift had just five errors in 148 chances last season for a .966 fielding percentage,while starting all 52 games, spending time at shortstop in three of the games. The Des Moines, Iowa, native finished with a .296 batting average and45 runs scored.Also coming back for another season on the infield will be second baseman Alex Staehely. The sophomore from Sugar Grove, Ill., had asolid freshman campaign, finishing with a .240 batting average and 52 starts. Staehely also had a .958 fielding percentage and helped turn 21 doubleplays.Five other infielders will look to fill the open spots at shortstop and first-base, vacated by Soto and Dike. Soto finished his Bluejay careerwith a.964 fielding percentage in three seasons at shortstop before being drafted in the major leagues, while Dike sits on the Bluejay top 10 singleseason lists for putouts in a season with 554 (putting him at fourth).Returners Vince Bellino (senior) and Michael Mutcheson (junior) will look to get their first playing time on the field, while newcomersNick Judkins, Chance Ross and Gabriel Thibodeaux also will add competition and depth. Judkins is a junior from Iowa Central CommunityCollege where he holds ICCC career records for batting average (.421), hits (169) and doubles (38). Ross, also a junior, comes from Cowley College– where he was a teammate of current Bluejay, Chase Webb. Ross hit .362 in his sophomore season, with nine doubles and two round trippers.Thibodeaux had a successful stint while at LSU-Eunice, finishing with 146 hits in his two seasons, and driving in a team high 72 RBI his freshmanseason.OUTFIELDStaehelyAdams Bowens Blatchford Cuno<strong>2011</strong> PreviewThe outfield will have the most competition for playing time, as they will need to replace starters T.J. Roemmich (one error in 146 chancesin right field) and Robbie Knight (a career .312 batting average and school record 81 career hit by pitches).Returning is Trever Adams, who led the team with a .356 batting average and .630 slugging percentage. The honorable mention All-MVCoutfielder led the team with 74 hits and 12 homers, as well as 58 runs batted in.Joey Bowens, Michael Blatchford and Clay Cuno each have experience from a season ago in the outfield. Bowens started nine timesin centerfield when Knight went down with injury. He hit .290 starting 10 games and playing in 29 games. Blatchford saw action in three games lastseason, with 11 putouts and no errors in center field. When he wasn’t a designated hitter, Cuno saw time in both left and right field. The seniorfinished the 2010 season with a perfect fielding percentage in 16 chances.Redshirt sophomore Jordan Makovicka will battle for a spot with freshmen Mike Gerber and Brad McKewon. Makovicka transferredfrom Nebraska and is looking for his first playing time this season. Gerber had a successful career at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville,Ill., finishing with first team all-state and all-conference honors.
