Murphy, a <strong>Creighton</strong> alumnus, designed thecurrent version of Billy, one with a more human stance andexpression.Prior to 1924, <strong>Creighton</strong> teams were referred to as the“Hilltoppers,” but that name lost favor because at least sixother teams in the country also used the same nickname. TheOmaha Bee assisted the <strong>University</strong>’s Athletic Board and AlumniAssociation in finding a new nickname by asking readers tosubmit possibilities. John P. Schlegel, S.J.Under the leadership of <strong>Creighton</strong> Presidentthe Rev. John P. Schlegel, S.J., <strong>Creighton</strong> <strong>University</strong>is nationally recognized as a premier university inthe Midwest and is experiencing a new era ofgrowth.Fr. Schlegel became <strong>Creighton</strong> <strong>University</strong>’s23rd president in August 2000, following nineyears as president of the <strong>University</strong> of SanFrancisco.Through his vision, the <strong>University</strong> is engagedin its most ambitious campus expansion effortin its more than 130-year history. <strong>Creighton</strong> isbecoming a national model showcasing a dynamicfaith-based living and learning community in a21st century urban environment.In 2005, Fr. Schlegel was <strong>Creighton</strong> <strong>University</strong>’sassistant academic vice president (1978-82), academicdean of Rockhurst College (1982-84),dean of arts and sciences at Marquette <strong>University</strong>(1984-88), and executive and academic vicepresident at John Carroll <strong>University</strong> (1988-91).Fr. Schlegel, a native of Dubuque, Iowa,entered the Society of Jesus in 1963 and wasordained in 1973. He holds B.A. and M.A.degrees from Saint Louis <strong>University</strong>; a B.D.honors degree in theology from the <strong>University</strong>of London; and a doctorate in international relationsfrom Oxford <strong>University</strong>.He is a member of numerous international,national and local boards of directors, executivecommittees and associations. Fr. Schlegelis a past member of the board of trustees ofChicago’s Loyola <strong>University</strong>, Xavier <strong>University</strong>,Loyola <strong>University</strong> New Orleans, Saint Louis<strong>University</strong> and Loyola College in Maryland. Fr.Schlegel also is a director of the AmericanInternational School of Hong Kong.In Omaha, he has served on several boardsincluding <strong>Creighton</strong> <strong>University</strong> Medical Center,<strong>Creighton</strong> Preparatory School, DuchesneAcademy and Opera Omaha. He is a memberof the board of directors of the Greater OmahaChamber of Commerce, Joslyn Art Museum andMid-America Council, Boy Scouts of America.In 2007, he became a Distinguished Eagle Scout.He is also a member of the US STRATCOMConsultation Committee.He has held numerous board positions withan array of organizations including St. Mary’sMedical Center Foundation, Il Cenacolo, Coro,World Affairs Council of Northern California, theAssociation of Catholic Colleges and Universities,the National Association of Independent Collegesand Universities, where he serves on the executivecommittee and chairs the public policy committee,and Heythrop College at the <strong>University</strong>of London.Fr. Schlegel also has served on accreditationsite visits for the North Central Association,and was a consultant to the Organization forEconomic Development and Cooperation basedin Paris.In 2004 the Woodmen of the World LifeInsurance Society Lodge 1 in Omaha presentedhim with the Honored Citizen Award for hisoutstanding leadership of <strong>Creighton</strong> <strong>University</strong>.For his promotion of understanding and respectamong all races, religions and cultures, Fr.Schlegel received the Otto Swanson Spirit ofService Award from the National Conferencefor Community and Justice in May 2003. He wasinducted as the Omaha Press Club’s 114th “Faceon the Barroom Floor” in 2007. In 2008, hereceived the Tim Rouse Advocate for Womenin Leadership Award and was honored by theNebraska Unicameral for his commitment todiversity.He enjoys opera, classical music, gourmetcooking, racquet sports and the outdoors.Fr. John P. Schlegel, S.J., became <strong>Creighton</strong>’s 23rd president in August 2000.
