<strong>Stations</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>30</strong> <strong>Years</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>IPM</strong> <strong>ESSEN</strong><strong>Started</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>1983</strong> <strong>with</strong> <strong>around</strong> 100 exhibitors <strong>from</strong> the plants sector <strong>in</strong> onefair hall, <strong>IPM</strong> <strong>ESSEN</strong> was, <strong>in</strong> 1986, already able to <strong>in</strong>tegrate the Florbedatrade exhibition and thus to give the start<strong>in</strong>g signal for the fruitfulcooperation <strong>with</strong> Fachverband Deutscher Floristen ("Trade Association <strong>of</strong>German Florists") s<strong>in</strong>ce then.In 1989, the range on <strong>of</strong>fer was completed by horticultural technology.The constant growth and the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternationalisation were alsoreflected <strong>in</strong> the ref<strong>in</strong>ement <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IPM</strong> logo which conta<strong>in</strong>ed a stylisedglobe <strong>in</strong> 1989; <strong>in</strong> that year, 21,800 visitors were <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> 550exhibitors <strong>from</strong> 15 nations.In 1992, the mark <strong>of</strong> <strong>30</strong>,000 visitors was bettered for the first time; <strong>in</strong>1994, there were already 37,000 visitors who met up <strong>with</strong> 800 exhibitors<strong>from</strong> 23 countries.Zentralverband Gartenbau (ZVG - "Central Horticultural Association")became the ideal sponsor <strong>of</strong> <strong>IPM</strong> <strong>ESSEN</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1996 and Messe Essenwelcomed over 1,000 exhibitors (precisely 1,050) to <strong>IPM</strong> <strong>ESSEN</strong> for thefirst time <strong>in</strong> 1997.In 2000, the ever <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong> visitors was taken <strong>in</strong>toconsideration and the duration <strong>of</strong> the fair was extended to four days. N<strong>of</strong>ewer than two m<strong>in</strong>isters came to the open<strong>in</strong>g ceremony: Karl-He<strong>in</strong>zFunke, Federal M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, and Bärbel Höhn, M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong>Agriculture <strong>from</strong> North Rh<strong>in</strong>e-Westphalia. In 2001, the new Fair Hall 3was available for the first time. The times when exhibitors had to presenttheir products <strong>in</strong> a tent (as the Italians did <strong>in</strong> 1998) were now a th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>the past thanks to the 17,000 additional square metres.Until today, the Florist Event Center and the Horticultural Info Centerhave been essential pillars <strong>of</strong> the Green City which has been successfullyestablished as a new feature <strong>in</strong> Hall 1A s<strong>in</strong>ce 2004.On the occasion <strong>of</strong> the 25th anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>IPM</strong> <strong>ESSEN</strong>, 1,400 exhibitors<strong>from</strong> 42 nations and 57,800 visitors <strong>from</strong> more than 90 countries came <strong>in</strong>2007.In 2008, the Innovation Showcase presented by Messe Essen and ZVGwas successful <strong>from</strong> the outset. S<strong>in</strong>ce then, <strong>in</strong>ternational breeders havebeen able to put themselves forward here as candidates for marks <strong>of</strong>dist<strong>in</strong>ction <strong>in</strong> various categories for their <strong>in</strong>novations.


Important visitors adorned the open<strong>in</strong>g ceremony <strong>of</strong> <strong>IPM</strong> <strong>ESSEN</strong> <strong>in</strong> 2009:Ilse Aigner, Federal M<strong>in</strong>ister <strong>of</strong> Agriculture, and Mariann Fischer Boel, EUCommissioner, honoured the event.After discussions <strong>with</strong> exhibitors and visitors, the Advisory Board for theFair made the decision <strong>in</strong> favour <strong>of</strong> the new day assignment <strong>of</strong> <strong>IPM</strong> <strong>ESSEN</strong><strong>in</strong> 2010: S<strong>in</strong>ce then, it has taken place, to the applause <strong>of</strong> the body <strong>of</strong>exhibitors and <strong>of</strong> the visitors, <strong>from</strong> Tuesday to Friday and has registeredeven greater <strong>in</strong>ternationality and even greater pr<strong>of</strong>essionalism <strong>of</strong> thevisitors. In 2011, the exhibitors were even more satisfied <strong>with</strong> the numberand quality <strong>of</strong> the visitors as well as <strong>with</strong> their <strong>in</strong>ternationality. 60,000visitors were <strong>in</strong>terested <strong>in</strong> the products <strong>of</strong> 1,508 exhibitors <strong>from</strong> 47countries.
