Dear Students,We are very excited to offer two newly renovated office space rooms for biostatisticsgraduate students, A1‐228 CHS and A1‐227 CHS.The larger room A1‐228 uses a key‐code and holds 9 cubicles. Each cubicle desk has twooverhead lockable compartments and a lower set of lockable drawers. Every desk comeswith 2 power outlets, an overhead light and an Ethernet cable. The smaller room A1‐227 uses a regular key and holds 4 cubicles. Each cubicle has a singleoverhead lockable compartment and a lockable set of drawers. There is a small roundstudy‐group table that seats 4.General Use of the RoomsAll students will have access (key code) to room A1‐228. Only students who have passedthe written comprehensive doctoral exam will have access to room A1‐227.Rules:1. Students with access to a room, who enter and find an unused cubicle, may temporarilyuse that cubicle for study space. However, the student who is officially assigned to thecubicle always has priority for its use.2. Students should keep cubicle desktops clear when not using the cubicles.3. Teaching assistants should not hold office hours in these rooms and should instead useother space such as the Statistics Consulting Room. If a Teaching Assistant chooses to usethese rooms for an occasional office hour, they should be mindful that the rooms areintended to be used as quiet work space, and be considerate of other biostat students in theroom. If two or more persons attend a TA’s office hour while other biostat graduatestudents are in the room for quiet work space, the TA should move his/her office hour to adifferent room (e.g. Statistics Consulting Room).Assignment of CubiclesAssignments to cubicles will be reviewed annually at the beginning of the fall quarter.Students will be asked to fill out an application and priority will be given to students whodo not have other office space within reasonable walking distance of the School of PublicHealth.Priority for the assignment of cubicles within each room is as follows.Students who do not have other office space: students with more seniority (numberof years as a departmental graduate student) have higher priority.Students with the same level of seniority: priority is given to students who wereeligible the previous year for a cubicle but did not get one. If within that level ofpriority, there are still more eligible students than cubicles, then the cubicles will beassigned randomly.Students who have had a cubicle for three or more years: are given lower priority.Students who have other office space: have the lowest priority.

Each cubicle can be assigned to at most two students and the drawers will be sharedamong the two students. All drawers have different locks to ensure maximum security for thestudents.Waiting listRemaining students who do not receive a cubicle can be placed on a waiting list in casethere is availability over the year. If cubicles become vacant mid‐year, a student will beselected within their level of priority by random sampling. If any student who is assigned acubicle in the beginning of the year but subsequently obtains access to other office space(e.g. from other work assignments) the student must notify the department, so that theircubicle could be made available to other graduate students who need it.
