Greeting From Sensei
Dear Students and Parents,
Summer has begun and I’m sure
many of you are looking forward to
enjoying this summer season. At
USA Wado-ryu, we have several
events planned so I hope you can
make time to attend them! The first
is our Summer Camp on July 22nd.
Then the week after, we have our
Orange County Fair Demonstration
on the 29th. Following that we have
our annual Beach Party in Huntington
Beach on August 19th. And finally,
on the last week of August, there is a
PATMA tournament at SOKA University
in Aliso Viejo on the 27th. I
hope everyone can make time for
these events!
In other news, I am happy to report
the amazing achievements of our stu-
dents at the recent UCSD tournament.
Although there was a power
outage in the afternoon that cut the
tournament short, most were able to
compete and placed in the top 3. In
particular, I would like to mention
Cael Howard, one of our students
from the Main Dojo. He is currently
one of the top ranking point leaders in
the PATMA tournament’s 18 and under
male division. Congratulations and
keep up your hard work! He is also
featured in this issue’s newsletter so
read more about him in the following
pages.
And finally, starting in July, I will be
opening up the Main Dojo for a Friday
morning class. It will be from 10:00 to
11:30. If you are free, I encourage you
all to attend this class.
Whatever your plans are for this summer
make sure to keep practicing and
attend classes regularly!

Cael Howard
My name is
Cael Taishi
Howard, and I’m
8 years old, going
into my 4th
grade at my
school this September.
I practice
Wado-ryu
Karate at the
Laguna Niguel
Dojo. My Sensei
is Sensei Shoji
Nishimura, who
always helps me
learn something
new in Karate.
I started Karate
at age 6, when I was taking Judo
classes with my big brother at the
Laguna Niguel Dojo. After watching
a Karate class one day, I
wanted to start right away; Karate
was my choice over Judo. Since
then, I’ve made a lot of great
friends in Karate, too.
I’m now a Purple Belt with Stripe
after passing a recent kyu test.
When I first started Karate, I could
barely even do 10 flat-hand pushups,
but I can now easily do 30
knuckle pushups. Karate for sure
has been helping me build
strength, speed, and stamina.
My favorite thing to do in Karate is
to practice Kumite. In my first tournament,
I placed second in Kata
and Kumite. Recently, I hardly
ever get lower than the 1st place in
Kumite. There have been probably
three or four times I didn’t get
placed in Kumite. I have also
beaten Brown Belts and Red Belts
a few times.
On the other hand, my Kata is not
as good; Sensei always tells me
that I need to practice more on
my Kata. Right now, I’m working
on Pinan Yondan.
The only weapon I’ve learned so
far are the nunchucks. I know the
first eleven moves in the first
nunchucks Kata. I look forward to
learning more in the future.
When I’m not practicing Karate, I
like to play trading card games &
Nintendo Wii, riding my Ripstik,
and going to school. I also go to a
Japanese school every Saturday
to learn Japanese language and
culture.
