We will use several vans to visit the outcrops. We plan to visit two locations, one north of the Harz Mountains and one in the Harz Mountains during a one-day field trip (200 km southeast of Bremen). The first site is the type location where Kalkowsky suggested the term "stromatolite" for the first time (1908). The outcrop shows wonderful stromatolitic structures in lacustrine sediments of the lower Triassic Buntsandstein. The second location is an Early Carboniferous seep site on top of the drowned Devonian Iberg atoll reef. Please bring rain gear and field boots. Hard hats will be provided. The costs for food and drinks for the lunch break will be between 5 to 10 Euros depending on your appetite. We will be back at least around 19:00 so that we will not miss the icebreaker. Field Trip to Spiekeroog, Frisian Wadden Sea guided by Christian Winter & Achim Wehrmann A bus will bring us to Neuharlingersiel from where the ferry boat will start at 11:00. 45 minutes later we will arrive on the island. Like other Frisian barrier islands Spiekeroog is separated from the mainland coast by a backbarrier or tidal basin, well known as the Wadden Sea, which is completely inundated at high tide and largely exposed at low tide. During the field trip we will see major sediment environments represented in this highly dynamic tidal system on the island. The walking distance of the field trip is 8-9 km, so hiking boots as well as a rain coat would be helpful. For sun protection also sun lotion is needed. The ferry back starts at 17:00 and the bus transportation from Neuharlingersiel back to Bremen will take until around 20:00. Conference Dinner The <strong>conference</strong> dinner is planned for Wednesday evening in the historical “Cellar of the town hall" (Rathauskeller) which is the "exquisite foundation" of the Gothic building from 1405. Food will be included into the <strong>conference</strong> fee (not the drinks).
