Believe it or Not!
THE MIRACULOUS BODY
A foetus acquires fingerprints at the age of three months.
A fingernail or toenail takes about six months to grow from base to tip.
A person will die from total lack of sleep sooner than from starvation. Death will occur after about 10
days without sleep, while starvation takes a few weeks.
An average human scalp has 100,000 hairs.
An individual blood cell takes about 60 seconds to make a complete circuit of the body. Babies are born
with 300 bones, but by adulthood we have only 206 in our bodies.
Beards are the fastest growing hairs on the human body.
If the average man never trimmed his beard, it would grow to nearly 30 feet long in his lifetime.
By age 60, most people would have lost half of their taste-buds.
By the time you turn 70, your heart will have beaten some two-and-a-half billion times (figuring on an
average of 70 beats per minute.)
Each square inch of human skin consists of 20 ft of blood vessels.
Every person has a unique tongue print.
Every square inch of the human body has an average of 32 million bacteria on it.
Fingernails grow faster than toenails.
Fingerprints serve a function - they provide traction for the fingers to grasp things.
Humans have 46 chromosomes, peas have 14 and crayfish have 200.
Humans shed about 600,000 particles of skin every hour - about 1.5 pounds a year, By 70 years of age,
an average person will have lost 105 pounds of skin.
Humans shed and re-grow outer skin cells once in every 27 days - almost 1,000 new skins in a lifetime.
If it were removed from the body, the small intestine would stretch to a length of 22 feet.
If you are locked in a completely sealed room, you will die of carbon dioxide poisoning first before you
will die of oxygen deprivation.
If you go blind in one eye, you’ll only lose about one-fifth of your vision (but all your depth perception.)
It takes 17 muscles to smile-43 to frown.
Jaw muscles can provide about 200 pounds of force to bring the back teeth together for chewing.
Laughing lowers levels of stress hormones and strengthens the immune system. Six-year olds laugh an
average of 300 times a day. Adults only laugh 15 to 100 times a day.
On average women say 7,000 words per day. Men manage just over 2,000.
One in every 2,000 babies is born with a tooth.
‘Bill Gates' monopoly ends
Ramlal Bhagat, a XII std. student from Haryana, has developed a 32-bit operating
system demonstrated to be far superior to any of the desktop operating systems in
the market today. The program has been named "0- Yes".
0-Yes provides operating system services on any Pentium-based Personal Computer
(PC) and does not require MS-DOS as a base operating system. The operating
system's capabilities were demonstrated in a student convention at the Indian Institute
of Technology (lIT), New Delhi. HCL Ltd. Conducted benchmarks on the system and
published results, are partly reported here :
0-Yes is 34% faster than Microsoft's Windows 95 on similar hardware.
It is 29% faster than IBM's OS/2.
0-Yes loads 54% quicker than Windows 95 or OS/2.
0-Yes has a customizable, user-friendly graphical User Interface (Gill), in which
every program can be accessed with a maximum of two button clicks.
The operating system provides plug-n-play capability with numerous hardware
devices.
It has a superior memory management function.
The operating system is compatible with Windows 95&Windows NT 4.0.
HCL, Ltd. has offered an unknown amount to Ramlal Bhagat for purchasing the
rights to the software. Ramlal Bhagat, described as "quiet and philosophical" by
his peers, was not available for comment.
Suresh Reddy, spokesman for HCL Ltd.,said, "this is the operating system that
the world has been waiting for". On HCL's move to purchase the rights to the
software, he said, "We are here to ensure that Mr. Ramlal gets fair recognition
and compensation for his innovation. HCL Ltd. can provide him a firm launchpad
to market software globally". Is this the beginning of the end of the Bill
Gates' monopoly?
Cry Once More
Rain, so very charming, yet so mighty,
What is it that you have, that is synonymous with life?
That which symbolizes beauty,
That which forces a smile in the faces of those that reap?
I know my questions will be unanswered,
As I watch you in awe and wonder forever in time.
Tears of heaven that bathe the earth,
Tears of redemption, which cleanse our heart,
Tears of nature, the elixir of life,
Tears roll down as I admire your might.
My heart feels heavy when I see you at large,
Isn’t it supposed to be light, when at joy?
It is a pleasant feeling to see the sky open to set you free,
Always composed, seldom at spree.
Why does the rhythm of the falling rain-
Inspire both, the young and the old?
To forget all pain,
And dance in joy, in happiness untold?
Rites, rituals and offerings,
Prayers and chants, all just to get a glimpse of you;
And they still forgive, when you are not on time;
Why don’t they, when the same fault is mine?
If there exists, so much positivity,
Within your capability,
I would plea beyond my dignity-
Cry once more.
In a road traffic accident, motorcyclists are at high risk of injury, with
eleven times higher injury rate than car occupants. Better designs,
The system consists of a spring and a hinged joint “to take the impact
load”. The purpose of the same is to reduce the force acting on the
rider and to minimize damage during accidents.
During collision the forces acting on the fork is very high. The
mechanism is designed in such a way that it will not affect the comfort
of the rider during braking and normal ride.
During a frontal accident the full force acts on the front tyre of the
motorcycle, which will now be bypassed through the shock absorber that
has been introduced in the new design, while in the case of the
conventional design, during accident the forces acting on the tyre will
directly be transmitted to the rider causing more injuries to the rider. By
the proposed design one can reduce forces acting on rider during
accident by 60% when compared to conventional design.
Contest
conducted by Jay Jaya Jay a Engineering Engineering Colleg College, Colleg Chennai Chennai, Chennai in 0ctober 2005
The presentation started off by drawing a parallel between the Honda Motor unrest, Gurgoan
(2005) and the East India Cotton Mills unrest, Faridabad (1979); which destroyed Faridabad's
industry forever.
Are the Labour unions back? The riot that followed the Labour - Management dispute in
Gurgoan over the Honda motorcycle and Scooter India could be the first major sign of
things to come.
The HMSI Pvt. Ltd., with its manufacturing facility at Manesar in Gurgaon district, employed
more than 3500 workers - both regular and trainees. The HMSI management has been
blatantly violating all the Labour laws in their organization and its officials often resorted to
harassment of the workers. This gave rise to the need for a registered trade union, which
the management did not allow. This led to unrest among the employees and eventually led
to the industrial unrest.
Labour-management differences started in HMSI from December 2004. The problem
escalated in April 2005. It went out of hand on 25 July 2005 with a riot in Gurgoan where
protesters were lathi-charged by the State police. The Chief Minister R S Hooda stepped in
to resolve the strike and was settled on 30 July - after HMSI took back the four dismissed
employees.
The presentation also contained the views of HMSI Management, trade unions and the State
administration; the political reactions of various eminent personalities and Institutions and
the worries of the auto industry in India. The presentation also discussed the future
challenges and what the employers seek.
Much of the focus in this entire issue has naturally been on the genesis of the problem -
the recolonising process of globalization being enthusiastically ushered in by our ruling
classes. But the mindless obsession with FDI of the government is emboldening the foreign
companies to blatantly disregard our Labour laws.
But, then, Gurgaon gives hope as well. The militant manner in which the workers braved the
lathis and the unflinching eagerness to continue their just struggle; the involvement of the
workers' families in fighting for justice; and more importantly, the countrywide reaction this
savagery has generated are a case in point.
Indian Indian Corporates Corporates - - An An Ag Agenda Ag enda for for the the Next Next Decade
Intr Introduction Intr oduction
In this competitive era where the survival of the companies are more dependent on changes in
the environment, the unique strategies of the companies play a major role. In this paper we try
to relate these environmental changes due to globalization and addresse the agenda for the
corporates. Indian corporates are on top gear. These companies have begun to understand the
strategic importance of operations and have become seriously involved with variety of activities
at developing and enhancing their operational capabilities. The situation is such that only the
fittest can survive. The corporates are looking for a new ‘Synergy’ within themselves to lead the
race. The companies needs to face various challenges in the National and International markets
and hence should follow a unique plan which would yield profit for the company.
Ag Agenda Ag enda for for Indian Indian Industries
Industries
India has emerged as one of the cheapest producer of a range of products from steel, cement
and chemicals to two wheelers and TV sets by operation optimization and streamlinining cost
and supply chain. India competes in the global scenario on the basis of cost and English
speaking population, but few competitive advantages is unlikely to give sustained leadership.
Indian companies should develop multiple, interactive competencies that work synergistically to
give a sustainable advantage which is difficult to emulate.
Some Some of of the the draw draw backs backs of of Indian Indian manufactur manufacturers manufactur ers :
:
The manufacturing strategy of most Indian firms has still not addressed certain fundamental
issues of global competition like:
1. Concentrate on changing product mix rapidly.
2. Introduce new products based on indigenous R&D.
3. Introduce innovation in process.
4. Quality improvement process to reduce cost of operations and also the price of
product.
We still find that several standard practices on global shop floors are missing in India like
‘Pull Production’ system which is the basic ‘missing link’ between high productivity and low
inventory.
To sustain competitive advantage the following strategies are suggested for Indian companies :
PHAROS
117

118 PHAROS
1. Industries which are low in skill and technology and high on the labour content,
natural resources or raw materials must try to produce at lowest possible costs
2. Try to benchmark against the global practices and work on it with unique strategies so
that the competitors do not copy easily.
3. Cost based advantage does not guarantee longevity -- so be innovative in all aspects
and the companies should work on innovative concepts. For example 3M and HP
which inculcates innovativeness in every product it makes.
4. Cumulative investments in machines, knowledge resources and use of information
technology with overall value addition in services offered will lead a company to
sustain competitive advantage longer.
Customer Customer Orientation Orientation :
At this juncture in the business cycle, when new sales are hard to find, the key to survival for
many is in realizing maximum revenue from current customers. The idea is to sell, upgrade or
cross-sell using this hopefully good relationship to extend the vendor’s reaches within the
organization
Other Other activities activities activities in in the the ag agenda: ag enda:
Environmental ethics should be taken care of where the companies need to use eco-friendly
products for manufacturing the products which will lead to optimal use of the resources.
The companies, apart from making profits should also concentrate more on societal activities
for the Corporate Public partnerships. And these partnerships should lead to a responsible
CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) that enlightens and lifts the life of common people. This
will definitely increase the good will of the company.
Conclusion Conclusion : :
:
The new economy is all about speed, whether you talk about feeling the pulse of the market,
product innovation, customer retention or service parameters. In such environment, the changes
are so fast and discontinuous, -- the bigger the companies are, more exposed they will be.
Hence, linear models of growth will not work here. If the rise is exponential so can be the fall.
So, growth is not a choice for the corporates, it is a compulsion.
But for all this, a sound creative idea and a profitable business proposition are the preconditions
which have to be implemented effectively. As we see it from a point, the new
economy hype, perhaps even the critical success factors need a re-look from the managements
of the firms with the higher growth.
The survival strategy is analogous to the new economy where it’s no longer about the big
beating the small; it’s about the fast and steady beating the slow.
