ones and enjoyed them. I picked up TheDevil’s Nebula ($7.99), first of theWeird Space series, and it was as if I hadpicked up a space opera from the 1960s(except for a lesbian relationship–I don’tremember those from the 1960s spaceoperas). Lots of fast action adventurewithout much concern for scientificplausibility or deep character analysis. The human Expansion has beenpushed back by the forces of the alienVetch, but captain Ed Carew, pilot LaniaTakiomar, and engineer Jed Neffardsneak their small space ship across theborder to “salvage” art left behind in amuseum on a planet where the Vetchdrove out the humans. But there is alsoa mysterious crashed alien space ship ofpreviously unknown design on theplanet, which both the humans and theVetch are puzzled about. After variousdangerous encounters on the planet, Edand crew take off, only to be captured bythe forces of the Expansion government, which has been watching Ed’s crew andtheir various “salvage” operations forsome time. The government makes theman offer they can’t refuse, sending themon a mysterious mission to the far side ofVetch space, where they find more alienartifacts and eventually uncover a plotby an alien race from another universe toconquer our universe, starting by takingover both the Vetch and the humans.Satan’s Reach ($7.99), thesecond in the Weird Space universe justcame in and I haven’t had time to read ityet. Flipping through it, it clearlycontinues the war against the aliens fromanother universe, but doesn’t seem tofollow Ed and his crew.Recommendationsby Elizabeth LaVelleIn Vienna Waltz ($15.00),Teresa Grant delivers a story with asmany intricate layers and hiddenunderpinnings as a lady's toilette.
