Sarah Mowery ‘11Top Dog at the MountShe’s not a service dog, but she certainly provides a service. And she’s not a guide dog, but most days, you’ll find her inguidance. She’s Sadie: the unofficial mascot of Mount St. Mary. Thissweet Golden Doodle—her mother was a golden retriever and herfather was a miniature poodle—technically belongs to Sr. Joan Pfauserand Sr. Lisa Griffith, but once she prances into the school foyer, she’severyone’s dog. “We got her in August 2008 after our much-loved 14year old golden retriever died in June,” explains Sr. Joan. “Life just wasn’tas good without a dog.” And Sadie’s presence has certainly made life alittle more comforting at the Mount. “I heard a student say once, ‘It’s justhappier when Sadie is here.’ and I think that says it all,” said Sr. Joan. “Thestudents’ response to her is so gentle and so happy. More than once I havehad her climb onto a student’s lap when the student was crying.” But one ofSadie’s most endearing traits is to rundown the hall greeting all the studentsshe sees in the mornings, and roll overfor a belly rub. “It’s unconditionalacceptance,” said Sr. Joan.Volumes of research have been collectedto support the psychological and socialbenefits of interacting with animals. But itdoesn’t take a psychology journal to explainSadiewhat Sadie has meant to the girls (and faculty)at MSM. Just take a look at her report card.
