Mendocino 2009 TourBy Sacramento Valley RegionOctober 30 th – November 1 st (three days, two nights)LAST CALL!!!!!This is a 3-day, 2-night tour to the Mendocino area. And because Halloween occurs that Saturday, we will have a party.And then take an extra hour of sleep because it is also the end of daylight savings time.We have folks staying at the Hill House, Little River Inn, the lighthouse and some vacation rentals. It will also explore what is happening in otherregions as well as things seen on the internet that are Porsche related.I am a member of the regions but will remain anonymous. I am not very active but I thought I could provide a vehicle to talk aboutvarious happenings that of interest but not usually reported in this electronic world. Granted the reporting of items in a printedpublication is not immediate it does provide for some possible discussion and follow-up that is not of an demanding nature. These can be questions or food-for-thought or gossip or gripes.To start off I will say that the September 1st edition of the event calendar received from Babette Hatten was very interesting in thatit included an item on “How to Lead Driving Tours and Host Dinners”. It is being held on Tuesday, November 3rd and being presentedby Sheila McDade and Bill Keegan. Neat idea for those that want to know the best way to organize and present these typesof events.And how about someone writing an article on their driving impressions from the recent Panamera test drives down in Monterey inAugust? Jim here again with a follow up to last month’s article on blowing smoke. I want to first say thank you for some of thequestions I have received and we will be talking about them in the upcoming issues. In the next article I am going to take a look atthe PDK tranny and it’s operation. I would really love to get some input on driving impressions from some of you that have experiencedthis cool tranny first hand. Perhaps some of you that got to drive the Panamera while we were in Monterey?? Give me a callor hit me on eMail anytime. If you don’t, I know who some of you are and I will likely be calling you!It seems the Q & A type of format will work, at lest as long as there is interest in submitting questions. If your question however is related to personal ‘issues’, like “Gee Jim, how do I convincemy spouse WE really need to plunk down some change for that new Carrera GT?” … well, I think we will have to have a couple ofMargaritas to properly address that one. ;)After the last article I had two ‘printable’ questions come up. The first was more of a follow up question:Q:This question was submitted by Bill Keegan:“I have 911 Turbo, 1987 930 SE (Special Edition = Slant nose option) that will blow a good cloud of smoke on most (not all) startups,even if downtime has been as short as 5 minutes. Sometimes it can be a couple of months between startups. Oil usage is abouta quart every 1500 - 2000 miles, not excessive for a turboA:In order for a engine to produce smoke on start up, the oil has to be in the combustion chamber on start up. With that said, there acouple of things that can lead to oil being left in the cylinder.• Blow-by is one possibility. It is compression passing by the cylinder rings. Blow by can be checked with a test called acylinder leak down test (pressurize the cylinder and measure the percentage of air leaking by the rings). This will show if worn ringsare the culprit.• Another possibility would be, oil leaking past the valve guides.Like Bill mentioned in his question though, a quart of oil every 1500-2000 miles is considered normal for a turbo.the drifter 13
