DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION TO CONSIDER TAKING A POSITIONON MESA COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT 51’S BUDGET ISSUES ANDOVERCROWDING ISSUES<strong>City</strong> Manager Clint Kinney stated that Mesa County School District is continuing to evaluate itscurrent budget situation and overcrowding issues. The <strong>Council</strong> packets contained a draft letter anda draft resolution for <strong>Council</strong> consideration. The letter/resolution is designed to help the SchoolDistrict understand the <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong>’s position regarding the issues.Mr. Kinney noted that <strong>Council</strong>or Fuller had a couple <strong>of</strong> grammatical suggestions that didn’t make itinto the <strong>Council</strong> packets.Mr. Kinney continued that the proposal as he understands it is that the boundary lines betweenShelledy and Rimrock Elementaries would be adjusted so that about 80 children from Rimrockwould attend Shelledy Elementary and approximately 150 children from Shelledy who live in south<strong>Fruita</strong> would be bused to Loma.<strong>Council</strong>or Moss said he thought the <strong>Council</strong> should send the letter. <strong>Council</strong>or Fuller said that hefelt that the <strong>Council</strong> should try to keep the kids who live in <strong>Fruita</strong> in <strong>Fruita</strong> schools. He said hethought the letter expressed the <strong>Council</strong>’s concern about the issue.Mayor Henry said he understood that Harry Butler is the person who took the lead in opposing anytransporting <strong>of</strong> south <strong>Fruita</strong> kids to the Redlands area. He said the <strong>Council</strong> owes him a thanks.<strong>Council</strong>or Mascarenas stated that her preference would be to send a letter and not a resolution. Shesaid she liked the draft letter and how it was written. She commented that this was an example <strong>of</strong>how <strong>Fruita</strong> is so different from the rest <strong>of</strong> the valley and that she was disappointed thatcommunication didn’t quite happen earlier. She said she thought the letter would help open upsome dialog between <strong>Fruita</strong> and the School District.Mayor Henry agreed with <strong>Council</strong>or Mascarenas’ concern about the lack <strong>of</strong> communication, addingthat he spoke with Greg Mikolai the following day and indicated to him that there would most likelybe a letter coming. He said he also encouraged him to make sure in the future that when issues likethis come up, that the <strong>Fruita</strong> <strong>City</strong> <strong>Council</strong> be informed.<strong>Council</strong>or Moss noted that <strong>Fruita</strong> would be impacted more than any other community in the valley.
