His primary dutieswere to assist in the launch and recovery of aircraft. During his time aboard shiphe took part in two deployments to the Mediterranean Sea and IndianOcean, including one mission in which CV 66 evacuated Americancitizens from Libya.“I’m glad that Ingalls Shipbuilding is producing a ship with ournamesake. These new ships are designed with the needs andcomfort of the crew in mind. Part of my job now is to make surethe air is flowing through the ventilation system at the rightlevel. This system also protects the crew by keeping bad airfrom burning fuel or gas attacks out. Men and women willserve far from home on America (LHA 6) and their safety andcomfort are in my hands.”Glenn DonnellyIngalls Fire Department Battalion Chief/ParamedicGlenn Donnelly’s father, James C. Donnelly, served aboardUSS America (CVA/CV 66) from 1968 -1969 as a flightdeck planecaptain and an aircraft electrician for Fighter Squadron VF 102.He had his first world cruise in 1968 and was stationed at YankeeStation in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War.“My dad was overjoyed and honored to learn that we werebuilding the next America (LHA 6) here. It also brought back memoriesof his service in Vietnam. He plans to attend the christening with his goodfriend Curtis W. Massey, who served with him aboard the carrier. I was herewhen the USS Cole was brought in. That attack and 9/11 refocused my commitmentto these ships and to our Sailors. These Sailors will be fully dedicated to their joband the country like my father was when he served aboard CV 66. We owe it tothem to do our best to ensure their safety.”3
