This discussion of an intellectual migration that left Europe culturally bankrupt and changed the face of American arts is based on the book by Joseph Horowitz detailing the impact of refugees, predominantly Jewish, on American culture. We will also examine the current issue of prisoner treatment in the war on terror as well as other issues. Today, the web is exploding with entertaining material. Our panel of savvy young experts will present their favorites, from the Maccabeats to breakdancing rabbis. Come find out how YouTube, Facebook, and the internet are being used as wildly creative expressions of Jewish identity and forms of cultural connection. Thursday, April 5 | Noon $8 for lunch and program Afghanistan An Active Minds Presentation In October of 2001, the U.S. led a coalition invasion of Afghanistan seeking to oust the ruling Taliban and find Al Qaeda leaders, including Osama bin Laden. Join us for a look at the path Afghanistan has taken since then, including the establishment of a new government under the leadership of Hamid Karzai. We will also take a look forward at what the future holds for this war-torn country. Thursday, April 26 | 10:30 am $5 suggested donation “Finding My Way: An American Maverick in China” With David Raddock Looking back on more than 40 years of time spent in China, David Raddock has written a memoir that is as much about him as it is about China. The central message of these recollections is that Americans see things in different cultural ways: He gets caught up in several cross-cultural misunderstandings, in his own disregard for the magical secrecy that the Chinese invoke, and the utilization of police and arrest. Along the way, the writer, professor, and businessman becomes one of the first American scholars to collect and write about vanguard art in China. Thursday, May 10 | Noon $8 for lunch and lecture Baseball An Active Minds Presentation Join us as we trace the history of baseball from Abner Doubleday to Barry Bonds, from the 1919 Chicago Black Sox to the Curse of the Bambino. We will discuss Jackie Robinson and the role of the Negro Leagues as well as how the modern era has been affected by the use of steroids. Bring your own favorite baseball story to share with the group.
