<strong>Lidingö</strong> offers you space <strong>to</strong> feel good! We focus on health,<br />

keeping fit and outdoor life. On the island you can stroll in nature<br />

reserves, swim in the sea, play golf, ski and much more.<br />

Millesgården, a work of art in its own right, offers solace for<br />

the soul. Visi<strong>to</strong>rs <strong>to</strong> the many conference centres will come<br />

away with new insights.<br />

Today, <strong>Lidingö</strong> has a population of around 42,000. Housing<br />

development on the island has taken place in stages, resulting<br />

in districts with their own distinct identity. They are often<br />

named after the original manor farms, such as Rudboda,<br />

Sticklinge, Hersby and Skärsätra. The shopping centre at<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong> Centrum has some 40 attractive shops and boutiques.<br />

Ancient Viking settlement<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong> has a great cultural heritage. Grave fields from the<br />

Iron Age and runic inscriptions from the Viking Age show<br />

that the island has been inhabited since 600 AD. For almost<br />

300 years, <strong>Lidingö</strong> was part of the Djursholm Estate owned<br />

by the Banér family. In 1774, the island was separated from<br />

Djursholm, and the 25 manor farms were sold <strong>to</strong> wealthy<br />

S<strong>to</strong>ckholmers.<br />

Thirty years later, in 1803, the first bridge <strong>to</strong> the mainland<br />

was completed, and the island successively developed from<br />

an agricultural community supplying milk and fish <strong>to</strong> S<strong>to</strong>ckholm<br />

in<strong>to</strong> a modern residential area. In the mid-19th century,<br />

many summer visi<strong>to</strong>rs were attracted <strong>to</strong> the island and<br />

several imposing summer houses remain from this era.<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong>’s present day character developed over large parts of<br />

the island in the early 20th century. This is when the residential<br />

districts were founded and property developers offered<br />

“a healthy lifestyle, outdoor recreation and contact with<br />

nature”.<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong> became a merchant <strong>to</strong>wn in 1910 and received city<br />

status in 1926.<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong> church was built in 1623 by councillor Svante Gustafsson<br />

Banér, master of Djursholm. The bell <strong>to</strong>wer was<br />

added in 1817. The church is probably built on the site of the<br />

medieval St Anna Chapel.<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>Lidingö</strong><br />

Långängen Farm is a popular meeting place for locals and visi<strong>to</strong>rs alike.<br />

Close <strong>to</strong> nature<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong> offers great opportunities for outdoor activities all<br />

year round.<br />

A favourite spot is the 18th century Långängen Farm, with<br />

a café/restaurant. The beautiful surrounding countryside<br />

has been made in<strong>to</strong> a nature reserve. In addition <strong>to</strong> jogging<br />

tracks and walking trails, you’ll find the 70 m high Ekholmsnäs<br />

slalom and snowboarding slope, one of the best in the<br />

S<strong>to</strong>ckholm area. During summer months, you can play golf<br />

on the nine-hole course and driving range.<br />

Kappsta, on the southern part of the island, is another nature<br />

reserve and a heaven for botanists. This is the birthplace<br />

of the famous diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, and a bronze<br />

replica of his attaché case has been erected on the site of the<br />

house where he was born. The legendary case, supposedly filled<br />

with protective passes, was made by the artists Ulla and<br />

Gustaf Kraitz.<br />

The open countryside surrounding Elfvik Manor, a working<br />

farm, is ideal for rearing sheep and cattle.<br />

Enjoy the ”Health Walk”, a 6 km long walking trail starting<br />

from <strong>Lidingö</strong> Centrum. Along the route, signs have been<br />

placed describing points of interest.<br />

Rich outdoor life<br />

The <strong>Lidingö</strong> Regatta is held in early May. The regatta is highly<br />

regarded by yachtsmen. Those not competing can enjoy<br />

watching the white sails against the blue of the Baltic Sea.<br />

During the last weekend in September, some 30,000 runners<br />

take part in <strong>Lidingö</strong>loppet, the largest cross-country race in<br />

the world. The longest distance is 30 km. During the same<br />

weekend, there is a popular Nordic Walking event, which in<br />

2006 won an entry in the Guinness Book of Records.<br />

There are five swimming beaches along the island and a heated<br />

outdoor swimming pool at Brevik. If you prefer, there is<br />

an indoor swimming pool at Gångsätrahallen.<br />

All along the shores of <strong>Lidingö</strong> there are pleasure boat harbours.<br />

Boat ferries <strong>to</strong> surrounding islands call at Gåshaga<br />

jetty.<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong> Tennis Club and <strong>Lidingö</strong>vallen Sports Stadium are<br />

located at Kyrkviken. There is an ice-rink in Högsätra, and a<br />

first class 18-hole golf course at Sticklinge.<br />

At Bosön sports centre and sports college, run by the Swedish<br />

Sports Confederation, there is training for elite athletes<br />

as well as local clubs.<br />

The his<strong>to</strong>rically interesting Elfvik Estate, dating from 1775,<br />

is associated with the famous Swedish poet and bard, Carl<br />

Michael Bellman. It is now a restaurant and conference centre.<br />

The Town Hall opened in 1974 and was designed by Sten<br />

Samuelson. The Town Hall foyer and <strong>Lidingö</strong> Museum show<br />

interesting art and cultural heritage exhibitions all year<br />

round. The Town Hall houses the <strong>to</strong>wn’s collections of cultural<br />

archives. Further information about the his<strong>to</strong>ry of the<br />

island can be found in the nearby public library.<br />

A monument <strong>to</strong> the Swedish<br />

diplomat Raoul Wallenberg by sculp<strong>to</strong>r Willy Gordon has<br />

been erected in the Town Hall gardens. The Town Hall also<br />

features a Raoul Wallenberg room with a unique collection of<br />

documents concerning the world-known diplomat. This room<br />

is also used for civil weddings.<br />

Culture for the soul<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong>’s most famous<br />

<strong>to</strong>urist attraction is Millesgården,<br />

the home and studio<br />

of the sculp<strong>to</strong>r Carl Milles<br />

(1875-1955). In this unique<br />

environment, Carl Milles collected<br />

his own sculptures and<br />

works from artists of other<br />

countries. His collection of<br />

classical Greek and Roman<br />

sculptures is the largest private<br />

collection in Sweden.<br />

Concerts are performed during<br />

the summer months. Separate<br />

exhibitions are shown<br />

in the Art Gallery throughout<br />

the year. On an abutment of<br />

<strong>Lidingö</strong> Bridge, a Carl Milles<br />

statue of an angel playing the<br />

flute watches over the approach<br />
