SHOP | PROFILEMartin Calibration Co.QUALITY MATTERSCost is one of the major reasonswhy manufacturing is exported fromthe United States. However, MartinCalibration has seen a number ofproducts move back due to quality issues.Recently, one of its customersneeded to verify the primary measuringstandards for parts built in China thatweren’t functioning properly. WhenMartin Calibration measured thosestandards, they were found to exceedthe specifications by more than 10 timesthe allowed tolerance. The laboratoryin China found these standards withintolerance. By the time the problem wasrecognized, the entire production linehad to be shut down.“Anyone can buy a piece of measuringequipment that can measure to amillionth,” said Rick Brion, president ofMartin Calibration. “But few people aretrained on how to use it properly and getaccurate measurements.”Martin Calibration, headquartered inBurnsville, is one of the largest full-servicecalibration companies in Minnesota. Itspecializes in dimensional, electronic, force, temperature, pressure and torquecalibration services as well as gage repairand gage sales. Martin Calibration hasbeen in the metrology business since1980. It also has satellite offices in Omaha,Nebraska, and Aurora, Illinois.Quality is indeed one of the biggestadvantages the United States has overChina and other countries. And qualityproducts are due largely to qualitymeasurements.“We’re known for providing accurate,high-level measurements,” Brion said. The company maintains itscommitment to the ever-changing scienceof measurement and the impact that ithas on manufacturing worldwide withmembership to the National Conferenceof Standards Laboratories and a seaton the Minnesota section’s steeringcommittee.High StandardsIn today’s market, customers expectmore than just a calibration sticker—theywant quality measurements and theywant them done quickly. Today’s partshave gotten smaller and tolerances muchtighter. Calibration laboratories havehad to find more accurate and efficientmeasuring equipment to stay competitiveand abreast with technology.Martin Calibration employs seniorlevelcalibration technicians who havemilitary training or college degrees inelectronic, dimensional and physicalcalibrations. Brion, himself, has extensiveexperience in the industry. He was ametrology technician for 10 years atRosemount Aerospace and worked inmetrology sales with Brown & Sharpe for3 years and Taylor Hobson for 1 year.Since taking over Martin Calibration,Brion has purchased two other calibrationlaboratories in Minnesota—Cert Rep andCertified Technical Services. These twocompanies have been consolidated intothe Martin Calibration facility.“The first few years were extremelydifficult having taken on more thanexpected and the unknowns,” Brion said.“With long hours, hard work and littlepay, we were able to get through thoseMartin Calibration’s mission statement:“Create long-term customer satisfaction by providingquality service in a timely manner.”times and today Martin Calibration issuccessful and debt free.”Martin Calibration has grown 5times its original sales volume andnow employs 38 people. It listens to itscustomers and is always looking for waysto improve as a metrology sales andservice supplier. There are three factors that Brionattributes to his company’s success. “Weare price competitive, we offer a hugerange of capabilities and we provide asuperior level of customer service,” he said.Price CompetitiveMartin Calibration has not increased themajority of its prices in more than 8 years. In fact, it has actually reduced its prices insome areas. This has been a huge benefit forcustomers who have seen their costs go upover the last few years in other areas.“We’ve been able to hold our pricesmainly due to technology and findingfaster, better ways of doing things,” Brionsaid. “And we’ve passed those savings onto our customers because we care abouttheir success as much as our own.”Wide Range of CapabilitiesAs a full-service calibration supplier,Martin Calibration provides a wide rangeof capabilities specific to many industries, including general manufacturing, medical, nuclear, aerospace, automotiveand computer technology.“We don’t just do one or two types ofcalibrations,” Brion said. “There are veryfew types of calibrations that we cannot do.”24 | PRECISION MANUFACTURING January | February 2009PAID SUPPLEMENT

It relies heavily onMartin Calibration to fix, replace andorder new gauges. “We’ve gotten to knowthe tech team pretty well and they feellike our own employees,” Danz said. “Ifeel like Martin Calibration is a one-stopshop for all our metrology needs.”Applied Engineering is anothersatisfied customer. Located in Yankton,South Dakota, Applied Engineering is amedium-size machine shop that makes avariety of aerospace parts.“We’ve got a pretty extensiveinventory of measuring equipment, and many of them are fairly large,” saidTerry LaBounty, senior quality assuranceengineer. “So the fact that MartinCalibration comes right to our facility isa real asset.”LaBounty went on to say that hewould highly recommend MartinCalibration to other companies. “They’revery responsive,” he said. “We’ve alsopurchased a lot of our measuringinstruments through them and foundthat they’re price competitive.”Almost all of its customers agree thatMartin Calibration is more than a partnerin quality—it is a quality partner.
