18 Scholarships
Overseas Study
Where a scholar is required to pursue studies abroad for a limited
period in order to advance a research program, he/she may apply for
pemiission to hoto ttie award while overseas. The following
requirements must generally be met:
a) the period abroad will not exceed twelve months;
b) adequate supervision of ttie scholar's research program abroad
has been an-anged by ttie University before departure;
c) the scholar will remain enrolled at the University;
d) the scholar will retum to Australia to complete research program
immediately following the completion of study abroad; and
e) ttie period of overseas shjdy will be credited towards ttie
scholar's degree or research program at the University.
A scholar may apply for pennission to hoto a University Postgraduate
Award concurrently with another award for overseas study.
Field Work
Where a scholar is required to undertake fieto wori< or research away
from ttie University, but in Australia, he/she should enquire from ttie
supervisor conceming expenses.
Employment
Scholarship holders may undertake a strictly limited amount of parttime
paid employment, with ttie approval of ttie institution, provided it
does not interfere with their study programs.
Scholarship holders are only pemnitted to work up to a maximum of
240 hours per year, or, 8 hours in any one week Any exceptions to this
must be approved by the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research). Exceptions
will nonmally only be addressed in a student's third year of study.
Sick Leave
A student may have up to tiiree monttis paid sick teave and up to Uiree
months paid maternity teave within ttie tenure of ttie award. The
University may extend an award to compensate for periods longer than
two weeks if a medical certificate is provided by the student.
Benefits
Stipends and allowances are indexed annually.
Stipend:
The 1998 stipend was 515,888 (non-taxable) Payment of stipend will
be calculated from the date of commencement of study and will tie pato
fortnightly
Relocation Allowances
A travel allowance of up to a maximum of a singte economy or stiJdent
concession airfare(s) for ttie scholar, spouse and dependents and
removal expenses of up to $435 per adult and $220 per child with a
maximum of $1,250, may be pato on produdton of receipts, for a
scholar who is obliged to move restoence in order to take up ttie
award.
Overseas students or Australian citizens who are restoent overseas at
the time of receipt of the award may be pato a travel allowance based
on the singte economy airfare from Perth to Sydney.
Thesis Allowance
A scholar may claim reimbursement for an amount of up to $800 to
assist with costs for a PhD thesis and up to $400 for an Honours
Masters thesis.
Termination of Awards
Awards may be temninated at ttie disaetion of ttie University if
progress is not satisfadory
