In 1970, VCS began its service to the community by providing a two-pronged approach
to changing lives: recruit, train and supervise volunteers who in turn, provide counseling
services to court-referred clients. Since that time, Counseling and Family Services
has been the cornerstone of the agency, pioneering the innovative use of professionally
trained and supervised lay people to provide counseling for many other people who
suffer from a wide range of serious social problems. The objective of the Counseling
and Family Services programs is to increase the availability of accessible and affordable
counseling services for the entire community.

2010 Counseling and Family Services Highlights
In 2010 the VCS Counseling and Family Services Department trained and supervised
101 volunteers, including student interns who were fulfilling their course requirements
towards their undergraduate or graduate degrees in fields related to counseling and
social work. All of these volunteers and students provided counseling and family
services to 1,573 people including 368 children and youth. Of the 1, 573 people we
served, there were 539 clients in the general counseling program and 96 people in divorce
services, 90 people in the parent education program, 66 people in the Outreach for
Elders program, 351 people in the Relatives as Parents Program/Kinship Care Program.
We also trained 34 new volunteer counselors and provided 12 student internships.
