Ergonomic excellenceGood ergonomics is vitally important to the health and work ability of the dental team.Ergonomics also directly impacts the efficiency and quality of treatment providedto the patients and includes many different aspects such as lighting, noise, andodour conditions, the chemistry between the dental team members, and, of course, the equipment and software being used. With good ergonomics and proper teamwork, the dental team can enjoy their work andmaintain a higher level of productivity and efficiency throughout their working life. The Planmeca Compact i dental unit is deeply involved in creating a well-organised,efficient, and hygienic work environment. Take the patient chair for example. It has a sidelifting mechanism and an ultra-thin backrest which ingeniously solve the design challengeof combining patient comfort with good ergonomics. The acknowledged Planmeca designprovides a truly pleasant setting – and makes the unit a superior choice for any dental teamwilling to perform high-quality dental treatment.2 3

Visionary designWith a clear, slimline, and harmonious design, the Planmeca Compact i dental unitis an ideal choice for any dental professional looking for a sophisticated unit withan aesthetic and distinctive look. The practical and hygienic concept creates an efficient, pleasant, and safe treatment environment for both the patient and the user.Throughout their 35-year history, Planmeca has developed innovative products in closecooperation with the dental profession. The Company’s long design experience and closecustomer contacts are attested by the Planmeca Compact product range, a product rangeproviding practical and user-friendly solutions to support the entire treatment workflow.4 5

Unique constructionThe Planmeca Compact i design combines the patient chair,over-the-patient delivery arm, and operating light intoa comprehensive dental unit. The absence of a traditionalchair base maximises the clear floor area, which tremendouslyhelps in keeping the surgery clean. The junction area is locatedinside the unit base, so there is no need for cumbersomeumbilical tubing. The components of the unit frame, patient chair, and over-thepatientdelivery arm are made of cast aluminium alloy, a rigidyet lightweight material. Painted with an epoxy surface paint, all metal parts are completely insensitive to scratching andimpacts. Another advantage of epoxy paint is that it stands upto all disinfectants normally used in a dental practice. The unit is controlled with multiple microprocessors, resulting in a design that allows introducing new featureswith software upgrades. In other terms, the unit isretrofittable with features that may not even be availableat the time of purchase. The exceptional over-the-patient delivery arm isconstructed to ensure light, precise, and well-balancedmovements for maximum working comfort. The armincorporates a needle bearing mounting and a stablelock-free height adjustment for effortless operation. The instrument hoses are coated with silicon, makingthe instruments light and pleasant to work with.To ensure sufficient reach, the perfectly balancedinstrument arms are flexible forward and sideways. Each instrument hose can be operated independentlyof the corresponding instrument arm.The very small instrument console and the low-profileinstrument arms do not interfere with patient comfort, not even when the console is brought very closeto the patient’s oral cavity. The instruments are easyto access, allowing the team to maintain ergonomicpostures throughout the working day.The over-the-patient delivery with balanced instrument armsprovides an ideal solution for efficient four-hand treatment. As the assistant has easy access to the unit control panel, she can prepare instruments and handpieces convenientlyduring treatment. With handles on both sides, the consoleis easy to position. The unit allows great flexibility in positioning the console andtray table, ensuring optimal access to the instruments evenfor a dentist working alone. Also the suction arm adapts toasolo user, as it can be positioned very close to the patient’s head.Planmeca Compact i can alternatively be equipped with a hangingtube instrument console mounted on the over-the-patientdelivery arm. Designed with ergonomics in mind, the hanging tubeconsole brings the instruments at the correct height for easy reachand allows optimal access to the tray. The angle of the instrument holders can be freely adjustedaccording to personal preferences.6 7

Comfort for dental teamComfort for patientThe ultraslim upper part of the patient chair backrestallows the dentist and the assistant to positionthemselves very close to the patient’s mouth. This contributes to maintaining ergonomic posturesand ensures good, direct vision in the oral cavity.Along with the thin backrest, the side lifting mechanismof the patient chair also provides superior legroom.Planmeca Compact i is equally suitable for left-handeddentistry. The over-the-patient delivery arm,the instruments, and the assistant element adaptto the needs of a dental team working in mirrorpositions compared to a right-handed one. The greatflexibility makes the unit ideal even for practiceswhere left-handed and right-handed users sharethe same equipment. The patient chair has pre-programmable chair positions, which make it easy to take the patient to the desiredposition. When the chair is in treatment position, the Planmeca Delight operating light is automaticallyturned on. Lowering the backrest causes no pulling orpushing on the patient’s back; hence there is no needto readjust their position. The instrument console andthe operating light can be effortlessly positioned nearthe oral cavity. Thanks to the side lifting mechanism and integratedmounting, the chair has an exceptionally large verticalmovement range. The lowest position (350 mmfrom the top of the upholstery) makes it possible forthe dentist to remain seated even if the patient needs tobe treated in a semi-sitting position. The highest position(810 mm) enables easy stand-up surgery and extractions. The motorised headrest provides movements in threedimensions for easy and accurate head positioningas well as clear vision in all parts of the oral cavity. The maxillary and mandibular positions are easily found, and the adjustment range is sufficient for tall as well asfor paediatric patients. Practical and hygienic control isensured via an intuitive joystick.Alternatively, you can equip the unit with an adjustabledouble-articulated headrest. The patient chair design ensures the patient can easilyfind a comfortable position. The construction gives stableand extensive support for the patient’s back and arms. The backrest is designed to give support for the elbows. The seat angle is anatomical providing support andcomfort even during long treatment sessions, to childrenand adults alike. The small instrument console is outside the patient’sfield of vision, even though located in the immediateproximity for easy access by the dental team. The patient has easy access to the turning glassbowl – bright blue or sandblasted in white.Optionally, the chair can be equipped with an automaticfold-down legrest. The fold-down legrest movementsare synchronised with those of the backrest. Thesesynchronised movements enhance patient entrance andexit, and facilitate closer face-to-face positioning. The chair can also be equipped with optional armrests. They provide firm support that enhances patiententrance and exit. The right-hand armrest is movableto further enhance easy patient access. The armrestsare upholstered with the same high-quality materialas the patient chair. The surgical IV-armrest, intendedfor immobilising the patient’s arm, is a morespecific armrest option.Comfort for different-sized patients can be ensuredwith a cushion set, which easily adapts the chair forsmall patients and children. Cushions can also beused to extend the legrest to give extra support fora tall patient’s legs. The optional Ultra upholstery significantly helps torelieve patient anxiety by providing superior comfortand a weightless sensation. Patients benefit from feelingmore relaxed during the treatment. The Ultra upholsteryprovides extra comfort, appreciated especially in longtreatment sessions, like in oral surgery.8 9

Careful asepticsThe sophisticated Planmeca Compact hygiene designhelps the dental team to follow precise, even improved, infection control procedures. Let us first explainthe features regarding the unit external hygiene. All the parts exposed to contamination are removable orprotected by removable elements.• The unit smooth, uniform surfaces are easy to clean.• The metal body has a hygienic, impact resistantepoxy paint finish which does not get distorted bydisinfectants.• The instruments and suction handpieces aredetachable for sterilisation.• The hygiene membrane of the instrument console canbe thermodisinfected.• The instrument arms and hoses are removable foreasy cleaning.• The instrument console cover is an integral mouldedplastic piece; even if some cleaning agent is mistakenlysprayed on the cover, it will not enter the console andcause damage.• The glass bowl is removable for cleaning.• The silicon cover of the Planmeca Delight operatinglight handle can be thermodisinfected.• The instrument flushing holder is conveniently locatedunder the glass bowl and it can be removed forthermodisinfection.• The risk of cross-contamination is minimised,as the multifunctional foot control allowshand-free commanding.• The floor is easy to keep clean, thanks to the integratedunit design and the absence of traditional junctionboxes and umbilicals.• The seamless standard upholstery with rounded formsis easy to maintain.• The Ultra upholstery cleans effortlessly with soapand water. In terms of internal hygiene, the most important designconsideration was to guarantee that the treatmentwater maintains a good drinking quality. As a generalrule, the unit must not decrease the quality of the wateravailable from the inlet. To save time needed for good hygiene procedures, the two daily dental unit waterline flushing cycles arehighly automated:• Short Waterline Flushing to be performed duringpatient change• Intensive Waterline Flushing to be performed inthe morning and at the end of the day.Periodical treatment with Planmeca WaterlineCleaning System (WCS) efficiently controls the growthof microbial biofilms in the unit internal waterlines. The WCS routine procedure assures low bacterial CFUcounts. The automated, computer-controlled procedurealso assures that there are no residuals of chemicals intreatment water, and the water pH, smell, taste, andchemical composition is left unaltered. The Planmeca Water Management System (WMS) fulfilsthe strictest regulations concerning safe dental unitwater management, fully isolating the unit internalwaterlines from the public water system. Equippedwith the WMS, the Planmeca Compact i dental unitcomplies with the European Standard on Inlet WaterIsolation (EN1717). Moreover, the WMS is approved bythe German DVGW .The WMS includes the Waterline Cleaning System forremoval of microbial biofilm. You can use the WMScontainer also as a clean water reservoir. In Planmeca WCS and WMS, the solution used forkilling microbes and removing biofilms collectedin internal waterlines is called Planosil. It is highlyeffective, the effectiveness being proven by extensivescientific testing*.Planosil contains hydrogen peroxide (2.5%), silver (0.012%),and phosphoric acid (0.012%).Planmeca Compact i can also be equipped with CleanWater System, which is highly useful if the domesticwater quality is not sufficient for dental treatment. CWSuses a container as a water source for the instruments.Planmeca’s patented Turbine Anti Suck-Back (TASB)system provides an anticontamination barrier forhigh-speed outlets. This barrier prevents any aspirationof aerosols into the turbine and the tubing, efficientlyprotecting the patients from cross-contamination.Planmeca TASB has been a standard feature of allPlanmeca dental units for over 20 years.* Effective control of dental chair unit waterline biofilm and markedreduction of bacterial contamination of output water using twoperoxide-based disinfectants, C.M.
