Helping Hand to
Halstow Primary School
On Monday 18th June, 10 students from The John Roan
went to Sutcliffe Park to help Halstow Primary School’s
Sports Day.
There were over 200 children participating in the event from
Halstow and each of our students officiated a number of
different sports, including tug of war, sprint races, javelin,
long jump and various others.
Lekan Ejiwunmi, Joe Beaumont, Danny Fryer, Patrick
Savage, Michael Hyland, Frankie Scott, Brendan Berry, Josh
Richards (despite his eye looking like he’s been in 12 rounds
with Mike Tyson) from Year 8 and Leila Harris and Steph
Harris from Year 9 all came and volunteered. All the staff
in connection with Halstow were very impressed with the
confidence, knowledge and communication skills our pupils
demonstrated. I was hardly ever giving instructions as the
students all knew exactly what needed to be done and how.
Very well done to all of you.
Orienteering
17 Year 9 and 10 students took part in an orienteering
assessment day in order to improve their GCSE PE grades.
For the first two hours they were taught the theory aspect
of the sport but, the fun began when the students arrived at
Woodlands farm on Shooters Hill. They had to compete in
two courses: one for speed and the other for knowledge of
their compass work. The Year 9s took orienteering to the
next level when they constantly jumped through stinging
nettles in order to improve their time. That commitment
allowed all the Year 9s to gain a B or A grade! All students
gained a C grade or higher.
Invicta’s Sports Day
A selected few students from Year 9 and Year 8 went down to
Invicta Primary School during March to help them with their
School Games Day.
Courtney Courtney and Cheyenne Clarke from Year 9 both
performed a gymnastics routine during the school’s opening
ceremony. The two gymnasts were fantastic and received a
lot of praise from the teachers at Invicta, as well as impressing
the Mayor of Greenwich who was there too. They received
no help and choreographed the whole routine themselves in
their own time. I cannot speak more highly of these two girls.
On the second day of Invicta’s School Games Day, I took a
selection of students who are widely renowned for their high
ability and potential in Physical Education.
Year 8 students including Eder Uka, Haroen Abdinasir,
Nathan Evans, Abdul Adeabayo and Lakan Ejiwunmi all
came during the morning session and Robbie and Jamie
Sinclair, Kelsey Lewis, Dajon Golding and Hugo Douglas-
Freeman from Year 9 visited during the afternoon. Once the
students were there, they independently officiated a number
of different sports; including Paralympic sports such as sitting
down Volleyball, New Age Kurling and football.
The day was a great success and the staff from Invicta was
full of praise and complimentary comments towards the
students. There are a number of Sports Days upcoming
which a number of these students will also be present,
passing on their knowledge and expertise.
Well done to you all!
Mr Duncan
