Year 8 Assembly
with the Mayor of
Royal Greenwich
Greenwich has, as you probably know, become a Royal
Borough and to celebrate this we had the opportunity
to meet the Mayor (of Greenwich) and to create our own
coats of arms to represent Greenwich. Many of us did some
fantastic shields decorated with everything from stars to
ships to trees. We could also come up with our own motto
for Greenwich. Soon after this homework, the Mayor came
to visit during an assembly. He talked about his relationship
with the school and the Royal Greenwich story. A select
few (including me) then read out our research on a chosen
topic like the Cutty Sark and the Royal Park etc. We had
to explain why we chose to design our coat of arms in the
manner we did. The coats of arms are currently on display
in the Westcombe Park Library and we are expecting our
very special commemorative coins very soon. I very much
enjoyed doing this history project and found the Mayor’s
visit very interesting. It was a great experience to be able to
reflect upon the history of our borough and upon what makes
it such a special place to live.
The Olympic Flame
has arrived!
The Olympic flame has arrived! The
Olympic torch has started its journey
around the country in the Olympic
Torch Relay, and Ella Statham, Year
10, is one of the lucky few who will
be carrying the torch as it visits our
borough in recognition of her work
within our community.
Ella is an ambassador for the London
Football Association and works
with them to run football festivals,
training sessions and workshops
for the community to improve
grassroots football. She was nominated to be a torchbearer
by the school and the London Football Association and then,
before being selected, had to have her application rated by
local judges.
Ella says, “It’s a great feeling to be selected and I must
thank the school and the London Football Association for
nominating me. I think it will be an amazing experience to
cherish forever, and I can’t wait to carry the Olympic flame
on 21st July!”
Ella will be carrying the torch through the Royal Borough of
Greenwich on the 21st July and to find out more about Ella’s
work with the London Football Association visit her blog at
London Marathon
This April I was lucky
enough to be given a
place in the London
Marathon thanks to
Ms Coop and the PE
department. Year 9
tutor groups were
asked to nominate a
charity that we were
going to use this place
for and in the end we
chose Great Ormond
Street Hospital. This
was obviously a worthy
cause, particularly as
we have a number of
pupils and families at
school who need to
use this hospital’s great
service regularly.
A number of Year 9 pupils did a great job in collecting lots of
money in school from pupils and staff and also encouraging
members of staff to support me. Overall, the total we
raised was over £1,200, which I and Great Ormond Street
were delighted about. I have got to say it was a very tough
experience and it was certainly the thought of all the people
who had donated certainly kept me going, particularly
through the Isle of Dogs.
Thank you very much to all the pupils and staff who helped
to contribute to this.
