Watersports 2012<br />
44 Year Key Stage 3 students were selected to attend the<br />
fourth annual France Watersports trip in June. <strong>The</strong> trip<br />
began with a long journey, but once we hit the beach the fun<br />
began and never seemed to end. All students took part in<br />
body boarding, banana boating, catamaran sailing, funboat<br />
sailing, raft building, kayaking and windsurfing over the three<br />
days at Mimosa. Every night we were the champions at the<br />
centre’s disco and each day students were awarded prizes<br />
for their fantastic skill or for being entertaining.<br />
At the half-way point we transferred to Sergies for three days<br />
rafting down the Ardeche River. Once we arrived, we had<br />
pool time and organised the most creative pool session the<br />
lifeguard had seen all summer. We started out with a highly<br />
competitive game of water polo and moved quickly on to<br />
diving competitions, which included the very challenging ‘Act<br />
like a salmon’ dive. <strong>The</strong> winners were the lifeguards as we<br />
put on some great entertainment for them.<br />
<strong>The</strong> students believed the skills they would be learning to<br />
master the Ardeche river would include: how to paddle,<br />
communicate with their partner and rescue each other, but<br />
the staff’s plan was more challenging! <strong>The</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Roan</strong> staff<br />
ensured all students were able to master defending their<br />
boats to teacher attacks from above and below the water.<br />
Once again, we made the disco at Sergies special and<br />
enjoyed the daily morning dance routines. <strong>The</strong> PGL staff<br />
were extremely impressed with our leadership, helpfulness<br />
and energy. We are PGL legends.<br />
A Once in a Lifetime<br />
Opportunity<br />
On Friday 9th March, 80 very excited and enthusiastic Year<br />
7 students took part in auditions for the closing ceremony of<br />
the Paralympic Games in the school hall.<br />
After a two-month wait and having to fill in loads of paperwork,<br />
the final 45 students were announced. Students will now<br />
take part in rehearsals starting in August and will perform in<br />
the Olympic Stadium on Sunday 9th September as part of<br />
the closing ceremony.<br />
I would just like to say a massive well done and thank<br />
you to all the students who took part in the auditions and<br />
congratulations to those students who made it through.<br />
I would like to extend my thanks to those members of staff<br />
who have signed up to be chaperones and giving up part<br />
of their summer holiday to allow the students to be part of<br />
this opportunity. It could not have happened without you, so<br />
thank you.<br />
