Watersports 2012
44 Year Key Stage 3 students were selected to attend the
fourth annual France Watersports trip in June. The trip
began with a long journey, but once we hit the beach the fun
began and never seemed to end. All students took part in
body boarding, banana boating, catamaran sailing, funboat
sailing, raft building, kayaking and windsurfing over the three
days at Mimosa. Every night we were the champions at the
centre’s disco and each day students were awarded prizes
for their fantastic skill or for being entertaining.
At the half-way point we transferred to Sergies for three days
rafting down the Ardeche River. Once we arrived, we had
pool time and organised the most creative pool session the
lifeguard had seen all summer. We started out with a highly
competitive game of water polo and moved quickly on to
diving competitions, which included the very challenging ‘Act
like a salmon’ dive. The winners were the lifeguards as we
put on some great entertainment for them.
The students believed the skills they would be learning to
master the Ardeche river would include: how to paddle,
communicate with their partner and rescue each other, but
the staff’s plan was more challenging! The John Roan staff
ensured all students were able to master defending their
boats to teacher attacks from above and below the water.
Once again, we made the disco at Sergies special and
enjoyed the daily morning dance routines. The PGL staff
were extremely impressed with our leadership, helpfulness
and energy. We are PGL legends.
A Once in a Lifetime
Opportunity
On Friday 9th March, 80 very excited and enthusiastic Year
7 students took part in auditions for the closing ceremony of
the Paralympic Games in the school hall.
After a two-month wait and having to fill in loads of paperwork,
the final 45 students were announced. Students will now
take part in rehearsals starting in August and will perform in
the Olympic Stadium on Sunday 9th September as part of
the closing ceremony.
I would just like to say a massive well done and thank
you to all the students who took part in the auditions and
congratulations to those students who made it through.
I would like to extend my thanks to those members of staff
who have signed up to be chaperones and giving up part
of their summer holiday to allow the students to be part of
this opportunity. It could not have happened without you, so
thank you.
