Olympic Silver
Medallist
Visits School
On 30th May 2012, Olympic athlete and silver
medallist winner Roger Black visited The John
Roan School at Westcombe Park.
Rodger Black gave an inspiring talk to around
120 students at the school. He spoke about
his life and his dream of being a doctor before
his talent was spotted as an athlete. He had
joined a running club on someone’s advice
and how quickly from there his life changed
as his running times improved. His journey
to the Olympic Rostrum had begun. Chloe
Garland said, “Roger Black made me once
again excited about the Olympics and motivated me to
achieve my goals.”
Students were then introduced to Sean Kelly, an inspiring
Cisco Networking Academy Student. Sean had served two
and a half years in Wandsworth prison. He spoke about
how his life had hit a low in prison and his path there. He
explained how he has put his life back together and how he
hoped studying networking would help change his fortunes
for the better.
It was a great experience for the pupils to hear about two
very different lives. Roger Black had told of how he dreamed
of a career as a doctor and then found himself running for
Greenwich Champions!
On Wednesday 21st March, the Year 8 and Year 9 netball
teams played in the first Greenwich Schools Netball
Tournament, held at St Thomas More School.
The Year 8 team was partly made up of the Year 7 team and
therefore this was the first time they had played together.
The girls got off to a shaky start in the first match, recording
a narrow loss of 3 – 2 against St Thomas More. The girls
then went on to win the remainder of their matches. They
finished a creditable 2nd place overall. Well done to all the
girls who played.
The Year 9 team played extremely well with great shooting
and excellent defending. The girls won all of their matches
and didn’t even let a goal in. As a result they were the
winners of the tournament!!!!! Well done to the girls.
On Friday 18th May the Year 7 girls finally got to play in their
Greenwich Netball Tournament after this being postponed
Great Britain and Sean that he had seen his life take a wrong
turn and now he intended to improve and better his life.
Michael Ismail said, “I found the talk so inspirational and my
friends and I could not stop talking about it on our social
networking sites that night.”
Ms Coop, Head of Physical Education, said, “The Olympics
has delivered on it’s promise to impact the community and
the kids found the talk exciting. We were extremely fortunate
to have these guys come in and the students all appreciated
their time.”
twice due to strike action and the Great British Summer!
The girls got off to a shaky start against St Thomas More
and went 4 – 0 down. However, they pulled it back to 4 – 4
and then went on to win 6 – 4! I have never known one of
our teams to go down 4 – 0 and come back to win!! What
an excellent game. The final game was also a tense game
against Thomas Tallis. It was a really close game of netball.
An end-to-end game, the ball just would not go in and the
game ended 0 – 0. This meant that the girls were the overall
winners!!!! Well done to the girls.
What a season! – two trophies, 2nd placed and played in the
most matches that I can remember in a season. Girls, it has
been a pleasure to coach and take you to matches. You’re
all a real credit to the school. It has been my best netball
season, with a great bunch of girls. I hope to see you all
again in September for an even better season.
