In 1932, in the midst of the Great Depression, A Everett Austin, Jr. opined that 

“…the appreciation of works of art serves…to allay for some moments the 

worry and anxiety in which we all share.” It is uplifting to know that over the 

past twelve months, when the world experienced a challenging financial collapse, 

the gravity of which has not been witnessed since the 1930s, the Wadsworth 

Atheneum continued as a thriving and stable institution, ensuring that the 

legacy we leave to future generations will be a strong one. 

At the outset of the crisis, the museum implemented swift budgetary 

measures in a determined effort to reduce costs. Despite these difficult meas- 

ures, we remained committed to our artistic mission and to upholding the trust 

placed in us by our community. We continued to pursue a high caliber exhibi- 

tion program, added new art work to our extensive permanent collection and 

expanded our programming to include free admissions the last Saturday of 

every month.

from the President 

One of my main goals as the incoming Board President was to motivate 

deeper involvement by the museum’s Trustees and auxiliary groups. The Atheneum 

family responded energetically and faithfully to the call for engagement. Nowhere 

was this renewed spirit of service more evident than in the responses to the dete- 

riorating economic climate. The results of this broad display of commitment were 

evident in the events, programs and exhibitions that met or surpassed revenue 

goals and engaged new visitors with the museum. 

At a time when many museums canceled planned building projects, the 

Wadsworth began a much needed renovation of our historic campus, funded 

through the generosity of the state of Connecticut’s Department of Economic 

and Community Development and through a grant from the William and Alice 

Mortensen Foundation. This renovation is an important first step in our strate- 

gy of preserving and conserving the museum’s renowned collections and ensur- 

ing that we continue to be a good steward of our existing facilities.

Celebrating the Centennial 

All tenses of time conjoin at the Wadsworth Atheneum, an institution 

which continuously honors its historic past, while living in the present and 

planning for the future. As we continue to devise both short and long term strate- 

gies to preserve our financial stability and enhance the museum’s position as a 

cultural leader both locally and internationally, we remain fully committed to 

the constituents who help make our visions a reality through their unwavering

To all of the members, friends, patrons, and devotees of this museum— 

you have my sincere gratitude. I encourage you to maintain your vital support 

—particularly now, as institutions like ours play a critical role as a place of per-

from the Director 

In last year’s report I noted that the Wadsworth Atheneum had laid the foun- 

dation for a new beginning, and I’m pleased to report that we have seen tremen- 

dous progress towards many of our transformative goals. 

The Wadsworth is indeed poised for great things, which is particularly 

remarkable given these economically troubled times. Over the past year, the 

Board, staff, and our dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to enhance our 

offerings, and present dynamic exhibitions and programs that bring fresh insight 

to the Wadsworth’s permanent collection. 

For example, the museum presented highlights from its unrivalled collec- 

tion of costume and set designs in the exhibition, The Ballets Russes: Celebrating 

the Centennial, which corresponded with the 100th anniversary of one of the 

most significant artistic and cultural movements of the twentieth century. 

The museum also presented Hidden Treasures, which spanned more 

than 2,000 years of art and highlighted fragile or light-sensitive pieces that are 

rarely displayed, including a large scale painting by Japanese artist Kitagawa 

Utamaro, entitled Cherry Blossoms at Yoshiwara, which is regarded as one of 

the most important Japanese paintings outside of Japan. 

In addition to permanent collection exhibitions, the museum solidified 

plans for its Masterpiece Series, which will take place over the next two years 

and consist of small dossier exhibitions that will bring some of the world’s 

greatest art to Hartford, including works by Rembrandt, Wyeth and Monet. 

We have also made great strides in our efforts to expand the impact of 

our work and engage new, larger and more diverse audiences—goals which are 

central to our ongoing Community Engagement Initiative. 

Many of you will have heard about, or were invited to, one of our eight 

ChatBack sessions, which were held over the course of this past year to solicit 

feedback on how to make the museum more accessible and welcoming to the 

entire community.

After analyzing more than 250 surveys, 900 lines of comments, and 

hundreds of pages of notes—we invited all of our constituents to one last 

ChatBack where we presented a summary of what we heard and our plans to 

address key issues. More than 100 people attended this ChatBack recap and 

we will continue to provide updates as we implement new programs and projects 

in this critically important area. To help spearhead many of these efforts, I 

appointed a number of new senior staff members, including Directors of 

Development, Education, and Communications, a new Contemporary Art Curator, 

and Chief Curator. 

We have an exciting future, filled with opportunity, and we have you— 

our members, supporters, partners, volunteers, and colleagues—to thank for it. 

What follows on these pages represents the dedicated work of hundreds of 

people who help make the Wadsworth Atheneum thrive. I am extremely grate- 

ful to each of you.

This year’s calendar included focused exhibitions highlighting the Wadsworth 

Atheneum’s permanent collection. These exhibitions spanned a wide range of art 

history and included works by some of the world’s most celebrated artists. 

Director’s Choice: Abstract Expressionism to Color Field Painting featured 

masterworks previously unseen for almost a decade, including renowned paintings 

by Jackson Pollack, Willem de Kooning and Robert Motherwell. 

The Ballets Russes: Celebrating the Centennial provided visitors the 

opportunity to view costume and set designs from one of the most significant 

artistic and cultural movements of the twentieth century—in tandem with world 

wide celebrations honoring the 1909 founding of the Ballets Russes. 

Those who attended What Lies Beneath: Revealing Painters’ Secrets experienced 

the rare chance to look beneath the painted surface and gain deeper 

insight into the artistic process of geniuses such as Monet, van Gogh and Renoir. 

The museum also presented At Home with Gustav Stickley: Arts & Crafts 

from the Stephen Gray Collection, which offered a unique opportunity to showcase 

Stephen Gray’s distinguished collection of Arts and Crafts furniture by 

Gustav Stickley and his designers. This special exhibition also included pictorial 

photographs, Edward Curtis photogravures, and Native American baskets 

from the Wadsworth’s own collection. 

The Amistad Center for Art & Culture organized three exhibitions that 

continued the conversation about race and identity in the context of history and 

the present day. These included; Bare Walls, No Boundaries, Young Americans: 

Photographs by Sheila Pree Bright, and Lincoln: Man, Myth, and Memory.

Phoenix Art After Hours: 

First Thursdays at 

the Wadsworth Atheneum 

For more than ten years, the Wadsworth 

Atheneum has provided a monthly 

evening program with all the galleries 

open to the public. In its second year of 

sponsorship by The Phoenix Companies, 

Inc., First Thursdays featured live local 

musicians; talks with artists, curators, 

and scholars; a film; and a relaxed 

atmosphere to stroll the galleries and 

socialize with friends. 


Educational Programs offer visitors of all ages opportunities to understand, experience 

and enjoy the Wadsworth Atheneum. Adult programming includes lectures, conversations, 

Sunday Serenades concerts, Drawing from the Masters, Artful Lunches and 

Teas, and art activities that expand the dialogue around the museum’s collections and 

special exhibitions. Gallery talks and tours offer visitors the opportunity to explore 

the galleries with curators, artists, scholars, and docents. Community Days combine 

extensive programming and free access to the museum. 

Family and youth programs include Storybook Hour, Discovery Days, and 

Family ArtPacks that encourage families to explore the museum’s collection through 

activities and in-depth discovery of single objects. School and teacher programs 

include a wide variety of docent-guided tours available to students grades preK–12 

that can be designed to correlate with curriculum. Students from the Hartford Public 

School system receive free docent-guided tours and free transportation to the museum. 

University programs offer guided and curriculum-structured visits tailored 

to amplify and enhance the content of a specific course or topic. Our Internship 

program provides practical experiences in the daily operations of a museum for college 

students. Finally, the Docent Council celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2009, 

and had 100 active members who implement many of the museum’s programs.

dance performances. 

Discovery Days 

Discovery Days is an interactive program 

led by a teaching artist, offering studio art 

projects for children with an adult companion 

during school vacation weeks.

Family ArtPack 

The Family ArtPacks are designed for 

children ages 4–12 with an adult, and 

focus on a single work of art or a specific 

period in art in the museum galleries. 

They prompt families to look, learn and 

draw together. Filled with books, drawing 

pencils, and objects that help bring the 

art object to life, the ArtPack makes looking 

at art an interactive and hands-on 

experience. 

Festival of Trees & Traditions 

Working in concert with the Women’s 

Committee, docents were stationed at 

various works of art for a scavenger hunt, 

leading spontaneous discussions with visitors 

of all ages in the museum’s galleries. 

“To Catch a Thief” 

Walter Wick’s “To Catch a Thief” offered 

families a fun, self-guided tour of Faith & 

Fortune as they solved riddles to help 

catch a centuries-old thief. 

School and Teacher Programs 

Art Matters 

Art Matters combines a gallery visit with 

a studio art experience. Inventive themes, 

techniques and materials are used to stimulate 

creative thought and expression. 

The themes were “All Creatures Great and 

Small” (Winter, grades K–2) and “Land, 

Sea and Sky” (Spring, grades 3–5). 

Docent-Guided Tours 

Docent-guided visits are available to all 

students in grades preK–12 and can be 

designed to correlate with a class’s curriculum. 

Classes from the Hartford Public 

School system receive free docent-guided 

tours and can receive free transportation 

to and from the museum. Tour topics 

include: Learning to Look; Art and 

Writing; Storybook Hour; Connecticut 

People and Places; The African American 

Experience; American Art; and Artwise 

(for high school students), as well as the 

museum’s special exhibitions. 

Evening for Educators 

This complimentary program invites 

teachers to join museum staff and docents 

for a tour of the featured exhibition, discussion 

of themes and curriculum links, 

and peer networking.

Art Appreciation Course 

Learning to Appreciate Modern Art 

Jointly offered by Manchester Community 

College and the Atheneum, this four-session 

course taught by Charlene Shang 

Miller, Associate Museum Educator for 

Docent Program and University 

Audiences, offered participants the opportunity 

to expand their appreciation of art 

by exploring the museum’s collection 

through lively discussions held at the college 

and the museum. 

Curriculum-Structured Visits 

Curriculum-structured visits are tailored 

to amplify and enhance the content of a 

specific course or topic. Museum staff or 

docents work with faculty to plan an 

appropriate museum experience for their 

students. Faculty are also encouraged to 

work directly with the Education staff 

to utilize the museum’s galleries as classroom. 

Guided Visits 

Classes and groups may request “Looking 

at Art for College Groups” or special 

exhibition tours in which museum docents 

provide an introduction to the museum 

and lead active discussion of works of 

art in the museum’s collections and 

exhibitions. 

Internship Program 

Twenty-four college students and recent 

graduates were accepted and placed as 

museum interns in summer 2008-spring 

2009 in the following departments: 

Curatorial, Archives, Education, 

Exhibitions, Institutional Advancement, 

Public Relations and Marketing, Registrar, 

and Museum Design. 

Adult Programs 

Art in Focus 

Art in Focus is a 20-minute, docent-led 

discussion providing an in-depth look at 

a single work of art each Thursday at 

noon and one weekend a month. Visitors 

explored more than sixty works of art in 

this series. 

Artful Lunch and Tea 

The Artful Lunch and Tea series focuses 

on special exhibitions and the museum’s 

collection in the format of gallery discussions 

and special trips with curators and 

educators. Refreshments afterwards allow 

time for conversation between speakers 

and participants. 

CSI: Conservation Science Investigation 

Museum conservators Stephen Kornhauser 

and Ulrich Birkmaier guided visitors 

through their examination process to prepare 

the special exhibition, What Lies 

Beneath: Revealing Painters’ Secrets. They

Austin House Visits 

Hour long docent-guided tours of the 

Austin House are offered twice a month 

on the first and third Thursdays. This year 

the house visits were especially popular 

due to the exhibition Magic Façade: The 

Austin House and also due to a play about 

Chick Austin at the Hartford Stage. 

Nearly 400 eager visitors toured the 

Austin House this year. 

Docent-led Tours 

Drop-in Museum Highlights Tours 

and /or Special Exhibition/Collection 

Theme Tours are offered daily for the 

public. Depending on the theme, these 

hour-long tours focus on the highlights of 

our collection, or on special exhibitions, 

or specific themes. Groups may book 

docent-led tours of the collections and 

exhibitions. In addition, docents conduct 

tours for evening and weekend events, 

booked by external clients. 

Offsite Programs 

Education staff and docents conduct 

illustrated talks about the collections 

and special exhibitions at libraries and 

community centers by request. 

Access Art 

The Access Art bus picks up groups of 

up to twenty passengers and drives them 

to the museum at no charge. Groups may 

arrange to take a guided tour, or to view 

the museum on their own. The bus then

transports them back to their original 

site. The Access Art bus is wheelchair 

accessible and operates one day a week. 

The service is made possible by a generous 

grant from the St. Paul Travelers 

Connecticut Foundation. 

Large Text Labels 

Booklets with large-print labels are 

made available for specific exhibitions 

and are part of the museum’s goal toward 

accessibility. 

Verbal Imaging 

The Verbal Imaging Program is a 

service for blind or partially sighted 

adults. Visitors are escorted through the 

museum by specially trained docents who 

explore works of art through detailed 

descriptions. 

First Night Hartford 

This free festive program on New Year’s Eve 

offered families the opportunity to create their 

own masks in the museum, while jugglers and 

puppeteers entertained in the theater. 

Docent Program 

At year’s end the Docent Council has one 

hundred active members who implement 

many of the museum’s programs. They are 

required to attend docent training and 

have specific tour requirements to fulfill. 

Docent Training 

Docents attended training sessions on 

a variety of topics focusing on special 

exhibitions and collections. In addition 

to staff educators, docents, and curators, 

training speakers included: Kathryn 

Curran, Professor of Fine Arts, Trinity 

College; Cheryl Robertson, independent 

scholar; and Jeremiah Patterson, Associate 

Professor of Art, Hartford Art School. 

Docents-In-Training Program 

Thirteen Candidate Docents completed 

their education on looking and interpreting 

art, art history and best practices in 

gallery teaching for various audiences. 

They have either graduated into the 

Docent Program after a final evaluation or 

are currently completing the mentoring 

process with experienced docents, leading 

to graduation. 

Docent Evaluation 

Docents are required to be evaluated formally 

by a staff and peer docent evaluator 

once every three years.

Aetna Theater 2009 

It was an exciting and eclectic year 

of programming in the Aetna Theater. 

Highlights included a free screening of 

the Disney Pixar film UP and a joint 

presentation of The Black List Vol. 1 

& 2 with The Amistad Center for Art 

& Culture. In addition, the theater 

hosted Hartford premieres of twenty-two 

films and continued its participation in 

the Hartford Jewish Film Festival. 

Hip Hop artist and actor Fredro Starr 

graced the stage before a Screening of 

Save the Last Dance. The “Homage to 

Hitchcock” all day festival drew a large 

and enthusiastic audience.

A C Q U I S I T I O N S 

by the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art 

During the past year, a number of major works of art entered the Wadsworth’s permanent 

collection, including a previously unknown painting by the Hudson River 

School master Thomas Cole, entitled Life, Death, and Immortality, from 1844. 

The painting can be traced back to a letter Cole wrote to Daniel Wadsworth 

in 1844, imploring Wadsworth to acquire a series of historical landscapes for the 

newly opened Wadsworth Atheneum. This painting is the only known realization of 

the ideas expressed in the artist’s letter, and the only known work in the series. 

The museum also announced the acquisition of a masterpiece by renowned 

American artist, Georgia O’Keeffe. The work, entitled Slightly Open Clam Shell, 

from 1926, is considered one of O’Keeffe’s most exquisite pastels, and was produced 

during one of the most celebrated periods of her career. Previously, O’Keeffe was not 

represented in the Wadsworth’s collection of works on paper, making this acquisition 

a transformative addition to the museum’s existing collection. Additionally, a major 

acquisition of a seventeenth century German Rock Crystal Goblet was added to the 

European Decorative Arts collection. 

The Wadsworth also made significant acquisitions in the area of 

Contemporary art. These included, Soundsuit, a mixed-media, wearable sculpture by 

Chicago-based artist Nick Cave, and Kiruna, by minimalist sculptor Martin Puryear.

For more than two decades The Amistad 

Center and the Wadsworth Atheneum 

have enjoyed a unique institutional 

partnership. The Amistad Center is an 

independently incorporated not-for-profit 

African American cultural institution 

formed in 1987 to conserve, develop and 

provide public access to a collection of 

over 7,000 works of art, artifacts and 

ephemera. The founders determined that 

the Greater Hartford community would 

be well-served by housing The Amistad 

Center in the Wadsworth Atheneum, 

where it has resided ever since. Over the 

years this partnership has provided the 

opportunity for more broadly based 

museum visitorship and cross-cultural 

conversation. The Amistad Center presents 

2-3 exhibitions per year in gallery space 

at the Wadsworth Atheneum and offers 

a number of culture-based educational 

programs, some of them in collaboration 

with the museum. These exhibitions and 

programs are listed earlier in this report. 

The Amistad Center’s work is carried out 

by its Board of Trustees and staff who
