UNCLASSIFIEDACP 200(B) Vol 1Systems (AS), each of which in turn comprises a collection of allied units and possibly shorecommunication stations all connected by a collection of backbone subnets. The MTWANmay be connected to a larger allied network.227. The implementation of a robust and efficient MTWAN and the provision of a betterthan ‘best-effort’ level of service will become essential as data, video and voice are convergedonto a single network.SECURITY ARCHITECTURE228. The SV-1.3 also represents a secure network established at a Secret-High level. Asingle security domain at the Secret-High level, as opposed to multiple security domains, enables the timely and efficient exchange of data and reduces network complexity.229. Approved Boundary Protections Devices (BPD) can be used to allow information tobe exchanged between National and Allied domains of different security levels. These mayinclude physical separation (air gaps) policies, approved security guards and firewalls.230. The ‘to-be’ multi-level security architecture will be dependent on the development ofMulti-Level Security (MLS) products. As BPDs and multi-level security systems becomeavailable to nations, policy regarding information flows between national and allied networksshould allow for more efficient use of communication resources to meet both allied andnational requirements. Until then, nations will have to support separate networks for eachsecurity domain.Uncontrolled copy when printed2-8UNCLASSIFIEDOriginal
