Education is thekey to their future.Early Learning Goal:Increase the number of children ready to succeed whenstarting schoolEDUCATIONGraduation Goal:Improve high school graduation ratesUnited Way of Pierce County continued to focus on helping children to succeed by investing in teaching children andtraining parents and caregivers to be great first teachers. The research is compelling that early learning is absolutelyvital to later success in school and life. In 2012, United Way invested in Pierce County’s Early Learning Coalition, First5 FUNdamentals, which served over 10,000 children and 1,500 parents. United Way also provided funding to theChildren’s Museum’s Play to Learn programs, serving 707 children and teaching parents to incorporate learning intoplay. Another funded effort, the Promoting First Relationships program, an evidence-based practice in early learning,served 292 children. Additionally, 83 children received developmental screenings to help their families and caregiversknow what to teach. United Way also worked to help more early learning professionals provide the best care. Morethan 200 received training and 89 childcare providers received consultations from a funded partner that will help thembetter prepare the children they serve for school. United Way of Pierce County also funded 37 education programs aspart of the Community Solutions Fund.11
