programsTrades in actionHands-on andminds engagedAt the electrical benchstudents built basic motorsusing magnets, batteriesand coils of copper wire.A student tries her handat welding during theNovember Trades inAction tour of KwantlenPolytechnic University.Faculty and students at KwantlenPolytechnic University’s Cloverdalecampus might have done a second takein early November when a big yellow buspulled up and unloaded 32 excited Grade 7 and8 school kids.They needn’t have worried about any changeto the entrance requirements for Kwantlenprograms, though. The middle school studentswere participating in Trades in Action, a handsonopportunity to experience post-secondarycarpentry, plumbing, electrical and welding ata state of the art educational facility.“We’ve brought 32 of our middle school studentsto come and explore the trades at Kwantlen,”District Career Education Teacher Pat Rosensaid. “We’re hoping they’re getting a view ofwhat the future might bring. They have somepotential here. This campus is close to homeand it’s there for them.”For students with the right aptitudes the tradesoffer great career prospects. Skilled tradespeople are in high demand, a situation thatwill likely prevail into the foreseeable future.They can earn good money, doing interestingwork almost anywhere they choose. So schooldistricts like Langley want to be sure studentsare aware of the skilled trades options.The 12 and 13 year-old participants in theTrades in Action tour were positioned betterthan most to see the rewards places likeKwantlen Polytechnic open up.Explained Pat, “They’ve told me through theirapplications that they actually know they’repotentially good in the trades, because they’rebeing told that by other people: their familiesand their friends and their teachers.“They’re very excited at the prospect. I thinkthey’re very excited also that they do havesomething that they can look forward to forthe future.”You didn’t have to look far for confirmation.The kids rotated through four stations, and ateach activity they were fully engaged in thetasks and the learning that had been preparedfor them.12 Student Success
For students with the right aptitudes thetrades offer great career prospects.At the plumbing station some students worked assembling apipe puzzle, while others raced against the clock to constructa street hockey net out of PVC piping. At the electrical benchthey built basic motors using magnets, batteries and coilsof copper wire. At the woodworking station they assembledwall shelves. And in the welding shop the sparks were flyingas students cut steel and performed MIG welding.“It’s really fun,” Betty Gilbert student Kaedn said. “So farwe’ve only been doing welding, but we’re moving on toplumbing and electrical after.”Pat said the middle years are a good time to give interestedstudents a hands-on experience of the trades. “We’re tryingto give them a view so that, first of all, when they go into ourhigh schools they can look at our elective classes, our tech-edclasses.
