You may not have noticed – and it’s actually quitea compliment to the young photographers and actors involved –but this month’s cover photo was produced by a group of talentedstudents at Langley Fine Arts School.Do I hear applause? I hope so, because Donna Usher and her classhave done a fabulous job translating our concept for a cover shotinto a crisp, catchy image. We think it’s great that the first thingyou get to see when you look at Student Success is not only an itemabout students, it’s also by students.In future editions we will be offering our talented youth a crack atthe front cover, and if this initial experiment is anything to go by,you’ll be seeing more of their stuff showcased under the StudentSuccess banner.The story keyed by the cover shot establishes a new feature aswell. Technology rates so highly on the scale of issues that parents,students and educators have to deal with that we’ve introduced whatwe hope will be a regular feature of Student Success Magazine withSandra Averill’s Gift raps: what you need to say to kids getting hightechpresents.Sandra is an Instructional Services Coordinator with Langley SchoolDistrict. She specializes in the educational uses of new technologiesin school and in the home, and has a lot of information about thepros and cons you will find in the electronic Pandora’s Box of 21stCentury technology. In an era where our kids know more than wedo about how to use – and abuse – social media, cell phones, videogames and a slew of other gizmos and gadgets it’s useful to gainperspective. Her introductory drawing is also linked to the Kids Onlinearticle, which sort of gives you an idea of how large the tech thinglooms on our radar.
