Holiday 2006

From the President
GOD’S PROVIDENCE AND OUR ACTIONS
The theme for this year’s annual meeting of the American Association of Homes
and Services for the Aging (AAHSA) in San Francisco was “Tell Your Story.”
(AAHSA is comprised of 5600 non profit organizations providing housing and
services for older adults and like RHF, is celebrating 45 years in 2006). RHF has
been holding 45th anniversary celebrations in our communities to underscore the
importance of our residents, because without you, we would not exist. By the
time we cross into 2007, I will have participated in 110 celebrations covering 117
of our communities. I have been moved and enriched by the stories I have heard.
Countless persons have told me that they thought they had their retirement years well
planned and funded but everything changed when they or a spouse contracted a
serious illness which took almost all their resources. One former businesswoman told
me about spending 6 months in an intensive care unit and, because she was selfemployed,
her hospital and medical bills amounted to one and a half million dollars.
A former college instructor told me about living in her car for a year before she came to
one of our communities. Another person’s employer transferred her to another state
and then closed down, leaving her stranded without income or a place to live.
I heard about how one of our Service Coordinators, who is also a “Search Angel”
(someone who helps to locate persons given up for adoption when relatives want
to find them in later years), happened to be taking care of our RHF booth at a
UCC Conference because the person who was originally scheduled had to
cancel. One of my colleagues who serves at another health and human service
agency had their booth next door and happened to mention his frustration with
trying to locate his niece who had been given up for adoption many years ago.
Within a few days our Search Angel reunited them.
I’ve heard about the impact that our Project H.A.N.D.S. program is making. One
Executive from a battered women’s shelter told about how a young mother and her
children were in the shelter for several weeks because they lived in an abusive
situation. She couldn’t bring herself to make a life-changing decision. Then her
children received hats, scarves and gloves from the RHF Project H.A.N.D.S. program
and it reminded her of the things her grandmother used to knit. Her grandmother
had also lived in an abusive situation and had the courage to change. Receiving these
items ignited those memories and gave her the courage to do what she had to do.
Throughout this year I have been reminded about how little acts of kindness and
encouraging words become life-changing blessings. I believe that God’s providence,
which brought RHF into being and has sustained us for 45 years, also works in our
individual lives. A guiding force brings us to places and situations where we can
make a difference. And people who can make a difference come into our lives and we
into theirs. A small deed or kind word can set a major life-change into action.
Sometimes we don’t even know it. I wonder if years later that Bethlehem innkeeper
ever realized the difference his offer of a stable made in the lives of three people and
ultimately the world. Probably not, but it doesn’t matter. What matters is that
providence presented the situation and he did the best he could.
Someone has said that the secret of success in life is to be ready for the opportunity
when it comes. When providence presents the situation or the person may we give
our best!
Finally, as we close the book on 2006, I want to thank all of our RHF team members,
residents, volunteers, board members and donors for your support and efforts in
making the mission a reality. May you have a wonderful holiday season and new
year. And remember to stay alert for signs of God’s providence. May you act and also
receive thankfully! And keep telling your story!
A Fitting Tribute
Recognizing a Job Well Done
Festive Christmas trees, colored lights, wreaths, menorahs and
Santas. We see these symbols in many facilities as the Holidays
rapidly approach and residents and staff get into the Season.
Bishop’s Glen is no exception as staff string wreaths from the roof
and trees and lights go up in the various buildings.
What makes Bishop’s Glen different is a “gift” from the son of a
former resident. While Mary Tyre was a resident at the Glen her son
Charles would set up a display in the lobby of the Main Building for
her and her friends to enjoy. Over the years, the Dickens style village
would grow as he added more buildings and winter scenes. Residents
could not wait to see what changes he would make.
Mrs. Tyre passed away quite a few years ago but Charles has continued to keep her memory alive by
recreating the village at Christmas time.
Every year, on the day after Thanksgiving, Charles and his wife drive from North Carolina to Florida.
They stay in a guest apartment and spend the next three days putting the display together on a table in
the lobby. It takes him almost an entire day setting up the wiring alone as the display lights up and has
moving characters. He has it on timers so it lights up at lunch and dinner each day.
The village (which is stored at Bishop’s) is about 15 feet long and contains over 40 buildings as well as a
toboggan run, a ski hill and skating ponds. It stays up for all to enjoy until Mr. and Mrs. Tyre return on
New Year’s Eve. They celebrate the New Year with the residents and then spend a few days taking it
down and packing it away.
Bishop’s Glen is greatly appreciative of this wonderful holiday gift from the Tyres.
Mr. Jingles . . . the guy at Wal-Mart
The Board of Chosen Freeholders of Cape May County (County
Supervisors, to those of you who live outside of the state of New Jersey)
recognized Jennie Troxel, a resident at Yorkshire Place, as the oldest
volunteer in Cape May County. Jennie is 91 years old.
Jennie is a member of the Volunteer Auxiliary at Burdette Tomlin Memorial
Hospital, where she works four hours a week. She has been a member of
the auxiliary since 1961.
Along with her volunteer work at the hospital, Jennie helps out with Bingo
and other events at Yorkshire Place throughout the year.
As you read this article, Bob LeMay is in Springfield, Illinois, standing beside a Salvation Army red kettle,
ringing his bell. Rain or shine, sleet or snow, Bob is out from 9 in the morning until 9 at night.
He’s been doing it for 23 years.
He spent the first seven years in Marquette, Michigan, before moving to Wisconsin and Manitowoc. For
the past 16 years, Bob has been affectionately known as “Mr. Jingles . . . the guy at Wal-Mart.” When the
schedule does not permit him to be at Wal-Mart, he fills in wherever a ringer is needed.
Not only are his efforts appreciated by the Salvation Army in Manitowoc, where he has been their #1
individual ringer for the last 16 years, but Bob has his fans with the shoppers as well. It is not unusual for them
to bring him sandwiches and hot coffee to sustain him during those cold December days in Wisconsin.
His reputation has grown . . . this year he was asked to help out the Salvation Army in Springfield, Illinois -
much to the dismay of the local Salvation Army Adjutant.
Bob is a resident at Valley View Apartments, an RHF community in Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
Community News
Wellness Program Benefits Everyone
Yellowwood Terrace hosts a Health Fair for its residents, and
the Clarksville, Indiana community at large, every year. The
goal of the event is to promote better health and to give
attendees a “heads up” to any problem they didn’t know
about and encourage them to follow up with their personal
physician.
Leslie Combs, Yellowwood’s Social Service Coordinator, invites
health services vendors from the greater Clarksville community
to come to Yellowwood where they can hand out information
and provide health screening procedures to the older adults
who attend. This year more than 100 people attended the event.
It was a beautiful summer evening on the terrace; a classical guitarist set the mood. Various community
and resident artists’ works were displayed for the upcoming auction. Delicious food and beverages were
prepared and served by the Angelus Plaza’s Food Service Department staff and volunteers.
Thomas Baumann, Advisory Council President, welcomed everyone, thanked the sponsors and
encouraged everyone to open their wallets for the upcoming Auction. Los Angeles City Councilwoman
Jan Perry expressed her support of the event goals as Honorary Chairperson, and Jeffrey Winston
(Community Relations Coordinator and our Auctioneer) enticed the audience into purchasing various
works of art.
This event raised more than $25,000, which will benefit the many seniors served by the Angelus Plaza’s
Senior Activity Center. Many thanks go to the following: Good Samaritan Hospital, CRA/LA, Kawada
Hotel, California Hospital, Wells Fargo, Thomas Baumann, The Resource Collection, Command Guard
Yearly Appeal
Dear RHF,
In the fall of 2004, I became very ill and I
am now confined to a wheelchair and need some
handicapped features in my housing.
I have no family to depend on. My
financial situation depends on disability income
only. Fortunately, I found Centennial Manor (a
community of RHF) right away. But it is my
understanding that the accommodations I need are
hard to come by.
This housing is essential for me. It is safe
and in good repair. It has a security system,
interior hallways, call alarms. In my new life in a
wheelchair, those things are very important to me.
Being in a community with others is also
good for me-since I don’t get out much. A town
like ours should be able to have programs like this
for its seniors and I felt that way before my
disability.
Thank you RHF—you are a Godsend!
Sincerely,
Ann Purdy
Dear Friend:
Letters like this can break your heart, but we get them regularly. Most of the time , our communities are
full and we have to put someone like Ann on a waiting list for months or even years. This time we had
room, but many people in Ann’s situation are not always that lucky.
Before people (like Ann) had Retirement Housing Foundation (RHF) to turn to for their affordable
housing needs, many were hopeless and felt fearful of what was to become of them. It was out of this
great need that RHF began in 1961. I am sure you can understand that it is so very gratifying to see the
extreme difference that RHF can make in someone’s life. I hear stories all the time from residents about
how RHF changed their life.
We are proud that RHF has grown to be one of the nation’s largest non-profit housing providers, with
154 communities located in 24 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. We
have over 16,000 residents who are older adults, economically disadvantaged families, or persons with
disabilities.
Our vision continues - - - to provide a safe, decent, secure and affordable home which eliminates situations
where some persons may have to make desperate choices between paying their rent, purchasing food
or medication, especially for those living on limited incomes.
We take pride in helping people like Ann, who need a home they can afford. It reaffirms the important
work that we do.
We have accomplished a great deal in 45 years - - - yet the number of those with housing needs steadily
increases. In urban areas, we have multi-year waiting lists now, with the longest being almost 20
years!
By making a donation before the end of the year, either through an outright gift or through a planned
giving option (as long as the gift is irrevocable), you can still obtain tax advantages on this year’s tax return.
The key is that the gift must be completed by December 31st.
If you have any questions or comments or would like important information regarding various types of
gifts available and each of their financial advantages, please call 562-257-5141.
RHF relies on private donations from individuals like you to help us continue our critical mission.
On behalf of Ann and the others that your gift will help, I thank you.
Sincerely,
Laverne R. Joseph
President & CEO
P.S. While the majority of us may have a roof over our head and a good meal to eat, many people around
us are not as fortunate. Please send $20, $40, $60, or more to help make it possible for others in need to
have a roof over their head and live a more dignified and fulfilling life.
PLEASE NOTE: We received permission from “Ann Purdy” to publish her letter. Her real name was changed to protect
her privacy.
Fund Development News
Paula Jameson Awarded
Certified Fund Raising Executive Designation
CFRE International has awarded Paula Jameson the professional
designation of Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE). Paula has
been the Director of Fund Development for RHF for more than seven
years. She joins more than 4,600 professionals around the world who
hold the CFRE designation.
Individuals granted the CFRE credential have met a series of
standards set by CFRE International which include tenure in the
profession, education, professional achievements and a commitment
to service to not-for-profit organizations. They have agreed to uphold
Accountability Standards and the Donor Bill of Rights. Additionally,
candidates must pass a rigorous written examination - testing the
knowledge, skills, and abilities required of a fundraising executive.
We congratulate Paula on this important designation.
RHF Is Grateful To
Union Bank of California
For Their
$25,000 Grant
That Benefits Our Affordable Housing Fund
On Thursday, August 17, 2006, President Bush signed The Pension Protection Act of 2006.
The Act includes a provision that will allow taxpayers to make outright lifetime gifts of retirement assets
by utilizing direct rollovers from their Traditional and Roth Individual Retirement Accounts (“IRAs”) to
charitable organizations, such as Retirement Housing Foundation.
Under this legislation, for tax years 2006 and 2007, donors over the age of 70˚ can direct their IRA Plan
Administrators to distribute up to $100,000 per year to their favorite charities. The IRA distribution
(which would be ordinary income) is then fully excludable from the donor’s gross income for that year.
The benefits of the direct IRA Rollover to a qualified charity (such as Retirement Housing Foundation)
are:
• Donors receive a “dollar-for-dollar” deduction for the gift to charity in the year the gift is made.
• Taxpayers who take the standard deduction instead of itemizing their deductions can also make
use of this provision.
• The gift will not be subject to deduction limitations or phase-outs for donors in higher income
brackets or who have otherwise exceeded their charitable deductions for the year.
The IRA Rollover legislation is limited to direct gifts to charities and cannot be used to fund life interest
gifts such as charitable gift annuities, pooled income funds or charitable remainder trusts.

Holiday 2006
RHF’s
Wrappers
It began in 1996. RHF’s
national staff purchased toys
for the children living in a few
of their family communities.
For many of those children,
toys and presents under a tree were a luxury their families simply
couldn’t afford.
A tradition was born. In 2006, more than 750 children living in
RHF’s 15 family communities throughout the country will find
gifts waiting under their tree from Santa.
‘The Wrappers’, a group of volunteer residents from St. Mary’s
Towers, make a trek every year to the national office to wrap the
toys that have been donated by RHF staff, residents, and toy
manufacturers Hasbro and Mattel. Santa’s elves at the North Pole
don’t work any harder than these ladies at sorting, wrapping and
making sure that no child is left out.
