1THE TELEVISION STUDIOA visit to a modern television studio in operation usually impresses the mind of the inexperienced with a picture of finishedoperational simplicity or complete bedlam, depending entirelyon how the visitor views this wonder of transporting picturesthrough the ether to the millions of homes throughout America.But, regardless of how it first affects one, the answer is that it isa bedlam resolved to minute simplicity of operation. The television cameraman's movement of his camera to a desirable position for the picture he is about to pick up, is in itself a verysimple operation; but behind that act stands hours and perhapsdays of preparation. The pickup of an involved live televisionprogram represents the ultimate in the theatrical world in thecoordination of personnel and equipment.In television, unlike motion pictures, there are no retakes, thejob must be done correctly the first time with actors, cameramen,sound men, stage hands, electricians, stage managers, engineers,and directors all doing their part in the right way and at theright moment.In this book, among other things, we will attempt to breakdown the operational picture and to present each man's job inits simplest form.Physical AspectsA television studio may vary greatly in size and shape. In mostcases dimensions are governed by the location of the studio itself.In New York they range from a floor space of approximately onehundred feet by a hundred for large productions to those onlyabout thirty by forty feet which were planned for intimate presentations. These small studios have proved to have a very definite value as each program must be thoroughly rehearsed and itis too expensive to have small cast units monopolizing thousandsof feet of floor space. But regardless of its size, a televisionstudio is first a soundproof room, with coaxial outlets through3
