This symposium will review several aspects of cancer and the kidney. It will<br />

consider renal tumors in children in terms of presentation and treatment.<br />

Paraneoplastic syndromes and chemotherapeutic effects on the kidney will be<br />

reviewed in terms of recognition and potential intervention. Finally the emerging<br />

field of renal outcomes in long term cancer survivors will be discussed in terms<br />

of epidemiology and approaches to monitoring.<br />

Literacy: How Can We Maximize the Health and<br />

Safety of Children<br />

Target Audience: Clinicians, educators and researchers who wish to improve<br />

the quality of care for children and their families by incorporating a practical,<br />

actionable approach to the pervasive problem of low health literacy.<br />

Objective:<br />

- To understand existing approaches to the problem of low health literacy, and<br />

how practical strategies to address this issue can be incorporated into routine<br />

practice and within health systems, using the framework provided by the<br />

“National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy”, recently released by the<br />

US Department of Health and Human Services (US DHHS)<br />

Almost 9 of every 10 adults has trouble understanding and acting upon health<br />

information; 1 in 3 function at the most basic levels of health literacy. Cited as<br />

a key quality and safety issue by the IOM, AHRQ, and Joint Commission, low<br />

health literacy is linked to worse health knowledge and poor health outcomes.<br />

Despite two decades of research, health forms and handouts continue to be<br />

written at a level that is too difficult to understand, and few providers use<br />

recommended communication strategies. The “National Action Plan to Improve<br />

Health Literacy” (US DHHS), outlines strategies for change. Speaker one will<br />

provide a health systems perspective, guided by the AHRQ’s “Health Literacy<br />

Universal Precautions Toolkit.” Speaker two will address the relationship<br />

between health literacy and health disparities. Speakers three and four will<br />

discuss medication safety. Finally, the last speakers will discuss training the<br />

next generation of physicians.<br />
