This symposium will review several aspects of cancer and the kidney. It will
consider renal tumors in children in terms of presentation and treatment.
Paraneoplastic syndromes and chemotherapeutic effects on the kidney will be
reviewed in terms of recognition and potential intervention. Finally the emerging
field of renal outcomes in long term cancer survivors will be discussed in terms
of epidemiology and approaches to monitoring.
1130 The National Action Plan To Improve Health
Literacy: How Can We Maximize the Health and
Safety of Children
PAS Topic Symposium~Korbel 4B
Target Audience: Clinicians, educators and researchers who wish to improve
the quality of care for children and their families by incorporating a practical,
actionable approach to the pervasive problem of low health literacy.
Objective:
- To understand existing approaches to the problem of low health literacy, and
how practical strategies to address this issue can be incorporated into routine
practice and within health systems, using the framework provided by the
“National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy”, recently released by the
US Department of Health and Human Services (US DHHS)
Chairs: Benard P. Dreyer, New York University School of Medicine, New
York, NY and Hsiang Shonna Yin, New York University School of Medicine,
New York, NY
Almost 9 of every 10 adults has trouble understanding and acting upon health
information; 1 in 3 function at the most basic levels of health literacy. Cited as
a key quality and safety issue by the IOM, AHRQ, and Joint Commission, low
health literacy is linked to worse health knowledge and poor health outcomes.
Despite two decades of research, health forms and handouts continue to be
written at a level that is too difficult to understand, and few providers use
recommended communication strategies. The “National Action Plan to Improve
Health Literacy” (US DHHS), outlines strategies for change. Speaker one will
provide a health systems perspective, guided by the AHRQ’s “Health Literacy
Universal Precautions Toolkit.” Speaker two will address the relationship
between health literacy and health disparities. Speakers three and four will
discuss medication safety. Finally, the last speakers will discuss training the
next generation of physicians.
