Publication 1675.8 2:45pm–4:45pm 1700 An Introduction to the Cochrane Collaboration’s Methods for Conducting Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses PAS Workshop~Room 504 Target Audience: Students, residents, fellows, and faculty interested in learning how to conduct systematic reviews and meta-analyses. This workshop may be of particular interest to fellows and junior faculty. Objectives: - Teach attendees how to prepare a systematic review and meta-analysis using the Cochrane Collaboration’s methods and software - Inform attendees about opportunities for publishing systematic reviews through the Cochrane Collaboration and obtaining further training in methods for conducting systematic reviews Leader: Janet M. Moyer This highly interactive workshop will provide an overview of the Cochrane Collaboration’s methods for conducting systematic reviews, which are widely regarded as “gold standards” for carrying out this type of research. Leaders will use the Cochrane Collaboration’s RevMan software to demonstrate how to construct a systematic review. A Cochrane review on a child health topic will be used to illustrate the steps involved in completing a systematic review and, where appropriate, performing a meta-analysis. The software demonstration will be complemented by group exercises. Participants will also learn about opportunities for publishing systematic reviews through the Cochrane Library, obtaining further training regarding methods for conducting systematic reviews, and securing funding for systematic reviews. Designed to meet elements of the core curriculum for pediatric fellowship subspecialty training. 2:45pm–4:45pm 1702 Cancelled: Difficult Conversations: New Strategies for Teaching, Assessing and Implementing Communication Skills Curricula PAS Workshop~Room 210 Target Audience: Program and Clerkship Directors, Junior Faculty, Senior Faculty, Educational Leaders, and those responsible for teaching and assessing communication skills (ACGME and LCME Competencies), Trainees. Objectives: - Compare the differences between interpersonal and communication skills, and formulate competencies for meaningful communication in clinical encounters - Provide participants with 2 models (Four Habits and Kalamazoo Consensus Statement) as well as innovative assessment strategies (including multirater methodology with gap analysis) to foster teaching and assessment of communication skills on their own - Participants will create strategies for communication skills teaching and assessment and the implementation of communication skills curricula in their own settings Cancelled Leader: Elizabeth A. A syllabus and resources will be provided. 2:45pm–4:45pm 1704 Epigenetic Data and Techniques Applied to In Vivo Research: What Can You Say without Irritating Your Grant Reviewers? PAS Workshop~Room 206 Target Audience: Fellows and Faculty Interested in Starting a Career in Epigenetics. Objectives: - Understand the complexity of epigenetics - its not just promoters and DNA methylation - Know the techniques (as well as their limitations) being applied to study in vivo epigenetics - Understand the factors confounding the interpretation of epigenetic data from in vivo research - Understand what you can conclude and speculate from your in vivo studies Leader: Robert Lane, Co-Leaders: Kurt Albertine, Josef Neu, Robert McKnight, Lisa Joss-Moore Epigenetics still confuses investigators, particularly when applying it to in vivo models of pediatric disease. Issues that contribute to the confusion include: 1) the reality that epigenetic contributes to similar but distinct biological processes; 2) epigenetic techniques are often indirect and imprecise measures; 3) gender and tissue specificity; and 4) biological variability. To address these issues, we will provide overviews of epigenetics, epigenetic techniques, and application of epigenetic techniques to in vivo models of disease. We will subsequently present a model of in vivo pediatric disease and an hypothesis to have the audience work through the best aims through which to test the hypothesis. We will then provide data generated from those aims / techniques to have the audience work through the interpretation of what the data mean, as well as to generate defensible conclusions. The workshop will end with a question and answer session, as well as provide an annotated bibliography.
