Senior executiveappointed in Kuala LumpurMichael Connolly has been appointed as thenew general manager for corporate financeand administration of <strong>Leighton</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> (Southern),based in Kuala Lumpur.He is responsible for all the company’s financial andadministrative functions in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore,Sri Lanka, India and the Middle East.Previously with Clough, he has more than 14 years financialand accounting experience throughout Australia and <strong>Asia</strong>.Michael says that he is looking forward to the challengespresented by <strong>Leighton</strong>’s expansion into India and into the oiland gas sector, in which he has worked for a considerable time.“<strong>Leighton</strong> <strong>Asia</strong> (Southern) is very focused on its growth plansand it’s exciting to be a part of it. Our move into India will be abig challenge and has the potential to be extremely rewarding,”he said.A Certified Practising Accountant, Michael holds a Bachelorof Business (Accounting) from Edith Cowan University inWestern Australian.He replaces Matthew Irwin, who has returned to Australia.Impressive safetymilestone in VietnamBlueScope Steel Vietnam has congratulated <strong>Leighton</strong>’s teamconstructing its new plant at Phu My on achieving two millionman-hours without a lost-time injury (LTI).The company’s President, Peter Wilson,recently wrote a letter of commendationto <strong>Leighton</strong>’s project manager, CraigBowtell, saying:“This result reflects the time,effort, training and application ofsafety procedures and processesthat the <strong>Leighton</strong> managementteam and workforce have applied tothe project. It is a truly outstandingachievement.”Over the past two years, <strong>Leighton</strong> has had ateam of up to 900 people working at thePhu My site, where it is has beenundertaking the design and construction ofBlueScope Steel’s new metal coating plant.Currently, <strong>Leighton</strong> is installing mechanicaland electrical equipment for the processlines, and ancillary services. It is alsobuilding the administration offices.The overall project has involvedfabricating and erecting more than2000 tonnes of steel and placingmore than 16,000 cubic metres ofconcrete – aspects of constructiongenerally regarded as involving higherlevels of risk.Craig Bowtell said that the <strong>Leighton</strong>team had focused on safety from theproject’s outset.“This achievement is just reward for alot of hard work from everyone involvedwith this project,” said Craig.
