Major highway projectre-commences in MalaysiaLeighton has re-commenced work on the RM908 million (US$240 million) Kuala Lumpur to PutrajayaHighway in Malaysia. The project had been temporarily suspended, pending the outcome of a formalgovernment review of all major infrastructure projects in the country following Prime MinisterAbdullah Badawi’s appointment in October 2003.Approval to restart work was givenin January this year and, since then,Leighton has made significant progresson the project.Leighton is the lead contractor on thismajor design and construction contract,which provides a significant boost tothe company’s workload and highlightsLeighton’s position as Malaysia’s leadinginternational contractor.The project involves constructing adedicated highway linking the capital,Kuala Lumpur, to Putrajaya – the newregional centre south of Kuala Lumpurand home to the Malaysian Government’sadministration complex.The 26-kilometre artery will have two- andthree-lane dual carriageways. Tenkilometres of the route is elevated and theremainder is at grade. There are fourmajor interchanges and two toll plazasalong its length.Leighton’s contract for this state-of-the-artmotorway includes supplying and installingthe toll system, lighting, variable messagesigns, landscaping and noise barriers.The project, which involves a peakworkforce of 140 Leighton staff, isexpected to be completed in July 2007.Work resumed on thehighway in January.page 3
