They hope the judges like their creations at next week’s YouthFair. For Cross siblings, competition is secondary to community serviceBy KRISTEN TRIBEChristian and MichaelaCross of Alvord held anarmload of ribbons and trophiesafter the Chico ProjectShow. The 13- and 12-yearoldstand side by side in life, school and in the show ring. The siblings, who are membersof the Chico 4-H Club, are each others’ biggest fans— and toughest competition.Michaela said it’s not uncommonto hear her tell herbrother, “Good luck … Stillhope I beat you.”Christian smiles with thegraciousness of a big brother, but it’s hard to miss the competitivetwinkle in his eye.For the past few weeks, thekids have been fine-tuningrecipes, wrapping up craftprojects and working withtheir animals in preparationfor the Wise County YouthFair.“One lesson we learnedfrom last year is not to enterall the categories,” saidChristian. The Cross kids joined 4-Hin August 2008, and theirmom, Sherry Cross, becamea 4-H leader. The kids immediatelyjumped into severalprojects, and betweenthe two, they brought homeabout 35 ribbons from lastyear’s Youth Fair, and eachhad an animal in the sale.“This year they’re going topick only their favorite projectsto enter in the fair,” saidtheir grandmother, MarilynCross.Still, fair-goers are likelysee this brother-sister teamdashing between the barnsand the Women’s Building.Their “shortened” entry listincludes a cake, pies, cookies,an assortment of crafts anda menagerie of animals: heifers,Rosebud and Princess;and goats Snickers, Rusty,Josie, Kit Kat, Rio and Foxy.Michaela is also in thequeen’s contest, and bothwill participate in the clothingcompetition.Throughout the year, theyalso enter other stock showsand contests. Christian andMichaela are home-schooled,and a typical day for thesekids includes an early breakfast,a morning of class workand an afternoon spent workingwith their show animalsor other projects. The duo spent most of oneday baking just prior to theChico Project Show. Michaelawas whipping together abatch of cookies, and Christianwas baking a cake. The kids choose their ownrecipes, tweaking them asnecessary, and Marilyn saidthey take the family’s dietaryneeds into consideration. They often use recipes fromthe Mayo Clinic Web site.“Their great-grandmotheris diabetic, so they try toget things that she can eat, too,” Marilyn said.
