It will br<strong>in</strong>g together the Steer<strong>in</strong>gCommittee of Seed<strong>in</strong>g Hope and Peace with recognized peacemakers,who will be recommended by the Advisory Board. <strong>The</strong>peacemakers will be <strong>in</strong>dividuals who are known both for theirnonviolent methods and for their ability to work directly withgroups engaged <strong>in</strong> violent conflicts. <strong>The</strong> peacemakers mightbe religious leaders or leaders of social organizations, who aregenu<strong>in</strong>e messengers of hope and peace. It may <strong>in</strong>clude NobelPeace Prize Laureates and nom<strong>in</strong>ees.Dur<strong>in</strong>g the week-long retreat with Thich Nhat Hanh, the groupwill practice together and develop plans for the second retreat,planned for May, 2011, which will <strong>in</strong>clude leaders and emerg<strong>in</strong>gleaders from conflict zones.Dur<strong>in</strong>g the second retreat, under the guidance of Thich NhatHanh and Sister Chan Khong, the participants will learn andpractice the tools of peace and reconciliation, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g deeplisten<strong>in</strong>g, m<strong>in</strong>dful speech, trust, understand<strong>in</strong>g, and compassion.It is anticipated that the teach<strong>in</strong>gs, along with the experience ofpractic<strong>in</strong>g and liv<strong>in</strong>g together <strong>in</strong> the Plum Village community,will nourish personal transformation and encourage new waysof th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g about and mov<strong>in</strong>g toward peace and reconciliation.Seed<strong>in</strong>g Hope and Peace beg<strong>in</strong>s at an auspicious time, whenthe President of the United States and other world leaders areencourag<strong>in</strong>g open communication and alternatives to violentconflicts. <strong>The</strong> retreats and future efforts provide a way for thePlum Village community, the Order of Interbe<strong>in</strong>g, and theextended community to share our collective experience andsupport others <strong>in</strong> mak<strong>in</strong>g our world, our communities, andourselves peaceful.We look forward to work<strong>in</strong>g together with the support of all ourDharma friends to realize the deep aspirations of the Seed<strong>in</strong>gHope and Peace Project.
