table 9: tee creek subwatershed restoration actionsPROJECT OPPORTUNITIESRECOMMENDED ACTIONS FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE LANDSGEOMORPHIC ASSESSMENT STUDY(NPCA 2007B)The South Niagara Falls Watershed Geomorphic Assessment (NPCA 2007b) identifiedseveral erosion and sediment accumulation sites in the Tee Creek subwatershed(Appendix B):1. Montrose Road/Yokom Road (Reach TCMa/TCMb/TCTa): This section of the streamis moderately to slightly entrenched which results in flood waters having limited tono access to the floodplain; therefore, the energy within the flow is contained to thechannel. Allowing a floodplain to develop within entrenched streams and increasingthe sinuosit along straightened reaches will help dissipate the energy within the flow.Bank erosion is present in this section in the form of bare soil extending up the bank.The presence of algae, oil sheen on the water, and an odour from disturbedsediment was noted during a site visit in 2007. Recommendations for this siteinclude increasing the extent, variety and diversity of native plant species within thenear bank zone to help stabilize the banks. In the occurrence of dredging, banksshould not be graded too steep. Water quality should continue to be monitored inthis watershed.2. Koabel Road (Reach TCMb): This portion of the stream is moderately to slightlyentrenched resulting in flood waters having limited to no access to the floodplain;therefore, the energy within the flow is contained to the channel. Allowing afloodplain to develop within entrenched streams and increasing the sinuosity alongstraightened reaches will help dissipate the energy within the flow. Bank erosion ispresent in the form of bare soil extending up the bank. The presence of algae,duckweed, and turbid water was noted during site visits in 2006 and 2007.In addition, sediment deposition is occurring downstream of the bridge on KoabelRoad. Recommendations for this site include increasing the variety and diversity ofnative plant species within the near bank zone to help stabilize the banks. In theoccurrence of dredging, banks should not be graded too steep.Water quality shouldcontinue to be monitored in this watershed.3. Schaubel Road (Reach TCMc): This section of the stream is moderately to slightlyentrenched which results in flood waters having limited to no access to thefloodplain; therefore, the energy within the flow is contained to the channel.Allowing a floodplain to develop within entrenched streams and increasing thesinuosity along straightened reaches will help dissipate the energy within the flow.The riparian buffer vegetation consists mostly of herbaceous vegetation. There arefew pools present along the stream bed. Recommendations for this site includeincreasing the variety and diversity of native plant species within the buffer zone,which will create a more diverse ecological habitat. In the occurrence of dredging,banks should not be graded too steep4. White Road (Reach TCMd): This section of the stream is adjacent to a wetland area.Trees in the middle of the stream indicate some channel widening may be occurring.A blocked culvert is present which may also be contributing to the channel widening.The presence of duckweed was identified during a site visit in 2007. Recommendationsfor this site include unblocking the culvert so water can flow freely and noexcessive flooding or sediment accumulation occurs in this area.5. Forkes Road (Reach TCMd-2): There is little to no near bank vegetation within thisportion of Tee Creek, which leaves exposed soil along the edge of the channel.Indications of channel widening occurring in this section include trees growingwithin the channel and at the toe of the bank and the presence of numerous debrisjams. Recommendations for this site include increasing the variety and diversity ofnative plant species within the buffer zone, which will create a more diverseecological habitat.59
