Doctor’s CornerSubmitted by Darren Duet, M.D.ECO Corporate Medical DirectorCoronary Artery DiseaseCoronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in theworld. More women die of CAD than they do of breast cancer andof all cancers combined. For generations, CAD was considered adisease of men, but it’s a serious threat to both men and women.CAD is what we commonly refer to as “blockages in the heart”and what leads to a heart attack. The symptoms of CAD varytremendously. Typically, the first signs of CAD are shortness ofbreath with activity, a crushing type of chest discomfort withpain radiating down the left arm, and diaphoresis (a sudden coldsweat). Almost half of patients who have CAD will experiencethese classic symptoms, while the other half may only experiencethese non-classic symptoms:• Weird feelings in the chest (not just pain or pressure)• Sweating for no apparent reason• Passing out, nearly passing out or lightheadedness• Nausea and/or vomiting• Sudden weakness• Pain, pressure or a strange feeling inthe back, neck, jaw or upper belly, or inone or both shoulders and arms• Fast or irregular heartbeatIf you or a loved one experience any ofthe classic and/or non-classic signs or symptoms of CAD, theninform a physician in a timely manner. With this information, anevaluation of your CAD risk factors, and your medical doctor’sphysical observations, your physician will direct your care towardthe best outcomes possible.Anywhere from one-third to one-half of any one patient’s firstsign of CAD is a heart attack, and in one-third to one-half ofthose, it is fatal. There are tools to help determine one’s risk.
