NEWS AND INFORMATION FROM EDISON CHOUEST OFFSHORE AND AFFILIATED COMPANIES
Arctic Ice Class Anchor
Handler Named AIVIQ
Several months ago, Chouest company officials invited
Alaskan school children from the North Slope Borough
to submit essays suggesting names for ECO’s new Arctic
ice class anchor handler under construction for Shell,
the largest and most advanced ship ever designed and
constructed by ECO.
On the morning of December 6, 2011, in the small village
of Nuiqsut, Alaska, 12-year-old Elizabeth Itta found out
that her submission was selected as the winning entry.
The announcement, officially naming the vessel “Aiviq,”
the Inupiat word for walrus, was made in front of all
100 students attending the only school in Elizabeth’s small town. The excited and tearful sixth grader discovered that she had won a pizza
party for her entire school (sixty extra-large pizzas were flown in from the nearest Pizza Hut 700 miles away!), a private dinner with Alaskan
dog sled legend, DeeDee Jonrowe, and a trip to Louisiana for the ship’s christening. In addition, Shell donated $5,000 to assist her school’s
Inupiat language program.
Twelve-year-old Elizabeth Itta was the winner of the essay
contest naming ECO’s new Arctic ice class anchor handler.
The students who submitted
the second, third and fourth
place essays were also
recognized by ECO and Shell.
The vessel’s two lifeboats
will be named “Agviq” and
“Sikusuuqtiqpak” honoring the
second and third place entries;
and the vessel’s fast rescue
craft will bear the name “Ivuniq”
honoring the fourth place
submission.
The December vessel naming
ceremony capped an eventful few months for the massive ship. In July, a portion of the
ship’s hull under construction at North American Shipbuilding (NAS) was prominently
featured in a magazine advertisement which ran in several international publications,
including National Geographic, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. NAS and
Shell hosted a media day on September 30 for press representatives from Louisiana,
Texas and Alaska. On October 6, CNBC anchor/reporter Bertha Coombs spent two days
at NAS and La Ship filing reports for the network, highlighting the job creation aspects of
both the vessel’s construction and Shell’s Alaskan exploration and production plans.
The impressive 360-foot hull rolled out of the NAS erection building on October 26, and,
within a few weeks, the top section of the hull (featured in the magazine ad at right) was
fitted onto the bottom. The vessel in its present state is pictured in the “NAS News” story
on page 8 of this newsletter, awaiting its trip to La Ship for final assembly.
A section of the AIVIQ’s hull was featured recently in a
widely distributed international magazine advertising
campaign by Shell.
A Tribute to Safety
Bradley Fielder, a crane operator for Shell’s operations at C-Port
2, recently penned the poem below to spotlight the vital
importance of Stop Work Authority in the workplace. He is to be
congratulated for his articulate testament to the safety culture at
our port companies.
All around me are sights and sounds.
Hazards and dangers can easily be found.
Many are subtle, but some glaring.
All can cause harm if I’m not caring.
The responsibility is mine
To recognize when all is not fine,
And to look out for my brothers
As an example to others.
It’s a mindset really, with positive action.
When there are no incidents we can take satisfaction,
That those with whom we have toiled
None of their lives have been spoiled.
So I will intervene.
And upon safety procedures lean.
And with courage, and no fear.
I will adhere.
PãO DE AçúCAR
The crew of the PãO DE AçúCAR
is justifiably proud of one of
their fellow crewmembers for
his amazing accomplishments.
Emmanuel Donkor works on board
the vessel as an AB/rigger. He
is always cheerful, hardworking
and ready with a smile. As the
founder and CEO of a non-profit
corporation, he is also making a difference in the world.
Emmanuel has been assisting people in need in his homeland
of Ghana for many years and just recently incorporated a non-
MIA
The crew of the 280’ OSV MIA was recognized by Chevron for
outstanding work in late August. While observing the crew position
loads on the back deck using the proper hands-free rigging
technique, Frank Edwards, a team leader on the DISCOVERY CLEAR
LEADER, commented, “While I was watching, they did not use their
hands. They used the taglines to position the loads and utilized
the boat hooks. They also seemed aware of their body placement/
positioning.”
Nathan Taylor of Chevron also remarked, “Feel proud of your
accomplishments, as this is a great example of committed team
effort by your crew. Your team faces significant exposures day in and
day out at the shorebase and at offshore drilling rigs. Excellent job!”
profit charity called E. Agape Ministries, focusing on helping
widows and orphans in and from Ghana.
Emmanuel lives in Columbus, Ohio, and is dedicated to his
family and his church. Emmanuel is also soon to be one of
America’s newest citizens. He has been studying hard for
his citizenship test and looks forward to celebrating his new
status.
The vessel’s crew says they are proud to work with Emmanuel
on PãO DE AçúCAR and encourage anyone who is interested
in supporting his non-profit charity to visit their website:
off of Brazil.
DEEP STIM BRASIL I
The DEEP STIM BRASIL I (Hull
recent sea trials in the Gulf of
Mexico. The 311’3” x 60’ x 26’
well stimulation vessel built
for Schlumberger represents
ECO’s first diesel electric
vessel. The ship will also be
historically noted as being the
last vessel to be side launched
at NAF on October 1, 2010.
In the front row are Travis Gisclair, Steve Burt, Daniel Paredes,
Karlton Robertson, Joran Hough and Jose Sanchez.
The second took place in late August when OGX requested the
vessel’s assistance when it was discovered that the merchant
ship MARGO N was without propulsion and was drifting
towards the OCEAN LEXINGTON rig. A brief meeting was held
with the crew on the deck, discussing the risks involved and
safety precautions. Though little time was available before
a possible collision, the maneuver was successfully achieved
by the skillful passage of a towline. The CAMPOS CAPTAIN
stabilized the situation until a larger vessel arrived to conduct
a tow.
C-CONTENDER
The C-CONTENDER
was in the right
place on the
afternoon of June
17, 2011, when the
vessel received an
alert from a rig 150
miles south of Biloxi.
The rig’s crane
operator spotted
black smoke, which
was coming from the 54’ recreational vessel FINAL FANTASY.
According to Ocean Springs restaurant owner Jamie Sablich,
he and five others were fishing in a tournament when suddenly
black smoke came out of the boat’s exhaust pipes, and soon
the boat was overcome with flames. Everyone onboard
C-COMMANDER
On June 12, 2011, the C-COMMANDER assisted a Cougar
rescue helicopter in medically evacuating an injured man from
the MAD DOG production spar. Due to active operations being
conducted on the rig, their helipad was not available for the
chopper to land. Therefore, the injured worker was sent to the
C-COMMANDER with a medic in attendance.
The medevac operation from the back deck of the vessel is not
that unusual; the boat has practiced the operation once a year
with Cougar since 2008. The C-COMMANDER’s crew includes
Master Dan Welch; Captains Meier McLeod and Grant Hoppe;
Mate Hector Medrano; Engineers Craig Dykes and Paul Kucan;
ABs Cardell Hughes, James Chinn, David Book and Rodney
Falgout; QMED Jim Lipari; and Cooks Trent Naquin and Cade
Chris Stickney. The Ops. Coordinator is Lucas Bychurch.
C-Innovation Update
donned safety vests and entered the water, drifting for about
an hour before the C-CONTENDER arrived to rescue them.
“My family
and I are very
grateful to
you and your
company
for the
overwhelming
efforts to
rescue us,” said
Sablich in a
letter to Gary
Chouest. “The
captains, along with the entire crew who rescued us, were
amazing.”
Submitted by Sandy Ying
C-Innovation’s (C-I) Brazilian operations continue to grow, with an exciting subsea construction
announcement expected soon. C-I of Norway is also expanding with several remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) in operation
and a number of new mobilizations planned for the near future.
C-I launched its Brazilian operations in 2008, deploying two ROVs on board the HERMOD, a semi-submersible crane vessel
owned by Heerema Marine Contractors. In June 2011, the Ensco drillship DEEP OCEAN CLARION arrived in Brazil with two
C-I ROVs. A few months later, C-I began mobilization on board the ECO anchor handler OLIN
CONQUEROR.
C-I of Brazil is also diligently working to develop new subsea construction
opportunities in the region, focusing on negotiating partnerships with several
companies capable of offering integrated service packages for subsea construction.
The supervisory team of C-I of Norway continues to oversee the daily operations
of multiple UHD (UltraHeavy-Duty) ROVs throughout the North Sea. Additionally,
several C-I ROVs are on contract in Australia and West Africa. The team is also finalizing
preparations for a new Christmas tree installation project for BP in the fields of Idun and
Skarv in the North Sea.

ExCELLENT INSPECTIONS fOR ECO VESSELS
Six ECO vessels (BJ DISCOVERY, C-COMMANDER, C-ROVER, FAST TRACK, HOLIDAY and INSPIRATION) recently completed their
annual USCG/ABS topside inspections with no 835s or worklist items. Additionally, the SEACOR RIGOROUS completed its internal
audit with zero non-conformities. We congratulate all these crews for a job well done!
The panel line crew has been at work on the construction of Hull
267, a 299’ x 60’ x 24’ offshore supply vessel. The results of their
efforts are starting to come together in building #5. In addition,
work progresses on AIVIQ, a 360.7’ x 80’ x 34’ Arctic ice class
anchor handling tug supply vessel. While these new construction
projects continue, the NAS drydock lifted five vessels in recent
months, bringing its cumulative total of lifts to 507.
The AMY CHOUEST was put on drydock to change seals. The
C-LEGEND had repairs to the port aft bulwarks. The MIA was in for a
hull inspection. The JOE GRIFFIN had a transducer installed and was
outfitted for work in Brazil. Also, the C-ACCLAIM had the seals and
drop-down bow thruster changed and three sea chests installed.
NAS News
NAS Employee of the Quarter
Johnny Gautreaux has been
working at NAS for 28 years, having
been hired on October 24, 1983.
He is currently serving as assistant
yard superintendent.
His career dates back to the
construction of Hull 127, which
was formerly a seismic vessel and
now operates as the TRAILBLAZER.
His most recent contributions have been on OSV Hull 267 and
AIVIQ, the Arctic ice class anchor handling tug supply vessel.
Update
The team at La Ship in Houma recently focused on the final
construction of Hull 272, DEEP STIM BRASIL II, a 311’3” x 60’ x 26’
well stimulation vessel, and the super structure for AIVIQ, a 360.7’
x 80’ x 34’ Arctic ice class anchor handling tug supply vessel.
Recent dockside work also included Hull 270, DEEP STIM BRASIL
I, a 311’3” x 60’ x 26’ well stimulation vessel. The NAS drydock was
transferred to La Ship, where it recently lifted the C-CARRIER, a
240’ x 56’ x 18.75’ offshore supply vessel.
In addition, the Fourchon drydock recorded 22 lifts in recent
months, bringing its cumulative total to 640.
Johnny was quite honored to be the recipient of this quarterly
award and humbly stated that he excels in his job because he
likes tackling different challenges everyday. “I like that our vessels
are unique and first class compared to the other shipyards I’ve
worked in,” he remarked. He also appreciates the ability to work
under covered buildings and likes the employee benefits and all
of the new and updated equipment.
A native of Westwego, Louisiana, Johnny has been a resident of
Lockport for the past 33 years. He and his wife, Margie, have six
children: Joshua, Juliet, Jaqueline, Jared, Jason and Jeffrey.
La Ship Employee
of the Quarter
Horace Scott has been a
sandblaster/painter at NAF/La
Ship since July 2002. He began as
a roustabout, but learned how to
sandblast and paint, working his
way up to first class B/P.
The first hull Horace worked
on was Hull 222, the C-LIBERTY.
Horace said the things he likes
most about working at La Ship are the people, steady hours with
overtime and company benefits. “The people at La Ship are really
great; everyone gets along and they work together to get the job
done,” he remarked.
The biggest changes that Horace has seen in the shipyards over
the years are the boats, as they are getting bigger, and the new
equipment. He is happy to be working at a new shipyard and
glad to have the opportunity to work for a Chouest company.
Horace hopes that the work continues for many years to come.
Horace was born in and currently resides in Houma. He and his
wife, Leslie, have three children: Ariel (17), Brett (15) and Grant
(12). In his spare time, Horace enjoys being home spending time
with his family.

Exciting things are happening at Navship as the
shipyard continues to grow, expanding its facilities and
workforce. The company currently employs 850 workers
and anticipates that number to grow to 1,000 in the
coming months.
The new 9,000-ton drydock at Navship has been
completed and certified by the American Bureau of
Shipping (ABS). The dock has been named SANSAO,
which translates to Sampson in English. The completion
of the drydock adds yet another dimension to Chouest’s
capabilities in Brazil.
In addition to supporting over 40 vessels operating for Chouest
in Brazil, Navship has now delivered 20 new vessels to date. Most
recently, Hull B124, BRAM BAHIA, was delivered to BRAM Offshore.
The vessel, currently under contract with Petrobras, is the second
BRAZILIAN ANTENNA APPROVAL
Marine Technologies’ (MT) third
generation of marine-stabilized
satellite antennas received
approval for use in Brazil by their
federal communication agency,
Anatel. MT is only the fourth out
of ten manufacturers of similar
antennas to receive the coveted
approval (joining Seatel, Orbit and
Schlumberger), and MT is proud
to have received the certification on
their first attempt.
Federico Zarghetta, MT’s antenna design engineer, stated, “The
MT-BB100 is Anatel-certified ... it is the best one-meter antenna in
the world. We can ask type approval of any satellite operator on
the planet without any limitation on transmit power!”
The MT-BB100 is the only two-axis antenna to receive Brazilian
of the clean-design diesel electric vessels delivered this year. In
addition, Hull B125, BRAM BELEM, was recently launched.
With the goal of increasing new hull construction capabilities,
Navship has begun renovating their original side launch area to
accommodate the construction of larger vessels. Once complete,
Navship will have the ability to build vessels outside as well as in
their erection building.
willing to help him learn more about his craft, which is something
he greatly appreciates.
His superintendent, Charlie Johnson, said, “Orlando is a team
player who is always willing to help his fellow employees, no
matter what the task. Recently he has been assigned new tasks
and duties, and as always, he does them with enthusiasm and
determination.”
Orlando lives in Gulfport with his brother. He also has extended
family in Austin, Texas, where he frequently visits. In his spare
time, he enjoys playing soccer and watching movies.
approval. With its carbon fiber reflector and structure, it is also
the lightest one-meter antenna available, weighing in at only
121 pounds (55 kg). It is also the easiest antenna to install and
boasts the simplest mechanical design. Its advanced inertial
measurement unit and navigational computer are state-ofthe-art
and quite small compared to competitors. Its antenna
remote control unit is based on simple commercial off-the-shelf
components with a user interface that doesn’t require custom
user software. The MT-BB100 will be installed on ECO vessels
bound for Brazilian waters.
ISO 9001 AND 14001 CERTIFICATION
The annual ISO 9001 and 14001 audits were recently passed by
all the MT offices (U.S., Norway and Singapore.) MT has been ISO
9001 certified since 1997 and 14001 certified since 2010, a status
indicating the most comprehensive certification of a company’s
quality process.
ISO certification covers virtually every process or operation
that affects product quality, including management, design,
engineering, purchasing, manufacturing and after-the-sale
service functions. It also includes personnel training and supplier
evaluation procedures.
High Blood Pressure Dangers: Hypertension’s
Effects on Your Body, Courtesy of the Mayo Clinic
High blood pressure (hypertension) can quietly damage your body for
years before symptoms develop. Left uncontrolled, you may wind up with
a disability, a poor quality of life or even a fatal heart attack. Fortunately,
with treatment and lifestyle changes, you can control your high blood
pressure to reduce your risk of life-threatening complications. Here’s a
look at the complications high blood pressure can cause when it’s not
effectively controlled:
Damage to your arteries – Healthy arteries are flexible, strong and elastic.
If you have high blood pressure, the increased pressure of blood flowing
through your arteries can gradually cause a variety of problems, including
artery damage and narrowing, or an aneurysm.
Damage to your heart – Your heart pumps blood to your entire body.
Uncontrolled high blood pressure can damage your heart in a number of
ways, such as coronary artery disease, left ventricular hypertrophy or heart
failure.
Damage to your brain – Just like your heart, your brain depends on a
nourishing blood supply to work properly and survive. But high blood
pressure can cause several problems, including a transient ischemic attack
(TIA), stroke, dementia or mild cognitive impairment.
Other possible dangers of high blood pressure – High blood pressure can
also affect other areas of the body, leading to such problems as sexual
dysfunction, kidney failure or kidney artery aneurysm, bone loss and
trouble sleeping. Additionally, eye blood vessel damage, fluid buildup
under the retina and optic nerve damage can be caused by high blood
pressure.
ECO Benefits Update
Web-Based Benefits Resource Center
At ECO, we are committed to providing a quality employee
benefits program to our employees. We are pleased to offer
a web-based communication system to help you reduce
employees’ time spent learning about and selecting benefits.
These pages are available to all employees and dependents
and will serve as an important resource center to access vital
company information. You will also find helpful financial
calculators, health and wellness information, documentation
requirements, forms and summaries of individual benefit plans.
Utilizing user names, passwords and/or individual specific
information, employees can log into the various providers’
websites and access their 401(k) account, find a PPO provider,
check on the status of a dental or disability claim, or research
prescription drugs.
The employee benefits resource center can be accessed at:
www.chouest.com/benefits. If you have additional questions,
the list of benefits administrators for the various Chouest
affiliates is also provided on this page.
