SECRETARY’S REPORTA brief update of ALLSA Excomactivities during the past fewmonths:A considerable amount of time hasbeen spent on updating the membershipdatabase so as to ensureeffective communication withmembers.Preparations for the congress to beheld between 29 May and 1 June2008 at Sun City are at anadvanced stage. ALLSA is honoured to have threeinternational faculty who will be delivering state-of-theartpresentations this year – Prof T Platts-Mills (USA),Prof S Prescott (Australia) and Prof N Papadopoulos(Greece).On the research front, a total of four ALLSA researchawards to the value of R125 000 were announced atthe end of last year. The successful applicants were DrAnita van der Walt, Dr Didintle Motsepe, Dr BarbaraNurse and Ms Gina Stear. It is anticipated that a similaramount of funding will be made this year too, thanks toour sponsors, GlaxoSmithKline, AHR Pharma (formerlyUCB Pharma), MSD and Cipla Medpro.ALLSA hosted a successful symposium on ‘Allergy andasthma to seafood: A paradigm model for developingcountries’ at the WAO Congress in Thailand inDecember last year (see report elsewhere in thisissue). A number of South African researchers also presentedtheir scientific communications in various othersessions of the congress.On the advocacy front, ALLSA has written a letter tothe SAMJ on its position with regard to ALCAT/IgGtesting, which will be published in March 2008. NEWSALLSA hosts a symposium at the WorldAllergy Congress in BangkokThe XX World Allergy Organisation Congress was heldfrom 2-6 December 2007 in Bangkok, Thailand. TheAllergy Society of South Africa (ALLSA) hosted a symposiumon ‘Allergy and asthma to seafood: a paradigmmodel for developing countries’. The symposium wasco-chaired by Prof. Mohamed Jeebhay from the Schoolof Occupational and Environmental Medicine at theUniversity of Cape Town and Dr Andreas Lopata fromthe Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology inAustralia. Seminars in the session presented aspectsof ongoing research on seafood allergy at theUniversity of Cape Town, which covered‘Epidemiological studies of allergy and asthma amongseafood processing workers in South Africa’ and‘Molecular characterisation of fish and crustaceansallergens causing allergy’, presented by Prof. Jeebhayand Dr Lopata, respectively. Dr Natalie Nieuwenhuizen,a postdoctoral fellow in the Division of Immunology atthe University of Cape Town, sponsored by MSD SouthAfrica to attend the conference, delivered a paper on‘Immunological mechanisms of seafood allergy’. Thefinal presentation, ‘Allergen microarray technology fordiagnosis and surveillance of seafood allergy’described the results of allergen microarray studiesperformed in collaboration with the Centre forProteomics and Genomics Research, directed by DrReinhard Hiller. The symposium highlighted the issuethat seafood allergens are important in causing allergiesand asthma in the occupational setting. The majordifference between consumer-related seafood allergyand occupational seafood allergy is that sensitisationprimarily occurs through inhalation of allergens presentin aerosols produced during processing of seafood.
