SECRETARY’S REPORTA brief update of ALLSA Excomactivities during the past fewmonths:A considerable amount of time hasbeen spent on updating the membershipdatabase so as to ensureeffective communication withmembers.Preparations for the congress to beheld between 29 May <strong>and</strong> 1 June<strong>2008</strong> at Sun City are at anadvanced stage. ALLSA is honoured to have threeinternational faculty who will be delivering state-of-theartpresentations this year – Prof T Platts-Mills (USA),Prof S Prescott (Australia) <strong>and</strong> Prof N Papadopoulos(Greece).On the research front, a total of four ALLSA researchawards to the value of R125 000 were announced atthe end of last year. The successful applicants were DrAnita van der Walt, Dr Didintle Motsepe, Dr BarbaraNurse <strong>and</strong> Ms Gina Stear. It is anticipated that a similaramount of funding will be made this year too, thanks toour sponsors, GlaxoSmithKline, AHR Pharma (formerlyUCB Pharma), MSD <strong>and</strong> Cipla Medpro.ALLSA hosted a successful symposium on ‘<strong>Allergy</strong> <strong>and</strong>asthma to seafood: A paradigm model for developingcountries’ at the WAO Congress in Thail<strong>and</strong> inDecember last year (see report elsewhere in thisissue). A number of South African researchers also presentedtheir scientific communications in various othersessions of the congress.On the advocacy front, ALLSA has written a letter tothe SAMJ on its position with regard to ALCAT/IgGtesting, which will be published in <strong>March</strong> <strong>2008</strong>.
