INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS<strong>Current</strong> <strong>Allergy</strong> & <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Immunology</strong> publishesarticles concerned with the underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong>practice of allergic diseases or clinical immunology.Material submitted for publication to <strong>Current</strong><strong>Allergy</strong> & <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Immunology</strong> is accepted oncondition that it has not been published elsewhere.The management reserves the copyrightof the material published. All named authorsmust give consent to publication. <strong>Current</strong> <strong>Allergy</strong>& <strong>Clinical</strong> <strong>Immunology</strong> does not hold itselfresponsible for statements made by contributors.Original research, review articles, case reports,brief research reports or photographs may be submitted.Letters to the editor are welcome <strong>and</strong> ifsuitable will be published in a correspondence section.All articles will be subject to peer review.Electronic submission is preferable. However, ifauthors are unable to submit electronically then thearticle may be posted to the correspondenceaddress listed at the end of these instructions.Manuscript preparation1. Articles may be submitted electronically onlineat www.allergysa.org/articles or follow thelinks from the homepage www.allergysa.org.To register, you need to enter your name, personaldetails, HPCSA number <strong>and</strong> a password.Once you have registered, you will receive anemail confirming your registration. You caneither submit your article immediately or logon at a later date. Authors should state theirfull name, qualifications, institutional affiliation<strong>and</strong> provide a corresponding address <strong>and</strong>email on the title page. Articles should be amaximum of 3500 words with no more than 3figures <strong>and</strong> 3 tables. Short reports should be amaximum of 1000 words with a maximum of2 tables or illustrations. Case reports shouldnot exceed 2000 words, with a maximum of 3figures, 3 tables <strong>and</strong> 10 references, <strong>and</strong> shouldconform to the usual structure: abstract (notmore than 50 words), introduction, methods,results, discussion.2. Each article should be accompanied by a summaryof not more than 200 words (50 words forshort reports). A structured abstract is requiredfor original research papers.3. Authors are requested to declare conflict ofinterest <strong>and</strong> source of funding relating to thearticle. Authors should disclose any relationshipwithin the last 2 years with pharmaceuticalcompanies in the following categories ifpertinent to the article: research grants, educationalsupport (sponsorship at conference),advisory boards, speaker, consultant or sharesin companies. This must be stated at the endof the manuscript before the references.Details of ethical approval obtained must beincluded in all original research articles.4. All abbreviations should be spelt out when firstused in the text <strong>and</strong> thereafter used consistently.5. Scientific measurements should be expressed inSI units.6. Tables should be labelled with Roman numerals,thus: I, II, III, etc. <strong>and</strong> illustrations withArabic numerals, thus: 1, 2, 3, etc. Tables <strong>and</strong>figures should be submitted as part of the manuscriptfile. Please do not submit photographsin Powerpoint <strong>and</strong> MS Word format – a highresolutionjpg is required. Photographs shouldbe submitted separately from the manuscriptfile <strong>and</strong> clearly labelled.7. Where identification of a patient is possible froma photograph the author must submit a consentto publication signed by the patient, or by theparent or guardian in the case of a minor.8. If any tables or illustrations submitted have beenpublished elsewhere, written consent to republicationshould be obtained by the author fromthe copyright holder <strong>and</strong> the author(s).References1. References should be inserted in the text assuperior numbers, <strong>and</strong> should be listed at theend of the article in numerical order.2. References should be set out in the Vancouverstyle, <strong>and</strong> only approved abbreviations of journaltitles should be used; consult the January issueof Index Medicus (No. 1 Part 1) for these details.Names <strong>and</strong> initials of all authors should be givenunless there are more than six, in which case thefirst three names should be given followed by ‘etal.’ First <strong>and</strong> last page numbers should be given.Example:1. Khakoo G, Lack G. Recommendations forusing MMR vaccine in children allergic toeggs. BMJ 2000; 320: 929-932.3. References for books should include author,title, town, publisher <strong>and</strong> date.Example:1. Abbas AK, Lichtman AH. Basic <strong>Immunology</strong>.Philadelphia: WB Saunders, 2001.4. ‘Unpublished observations’ <strong>and</strong> ‘personal communications’may be cited in the text, but not inthe reference list.
