Park Board NewsPresident’s Message – Fall 2013It has been our practice in this column to give residents abrief status report of current events. In past columns, wehave reported several housekeeping type projects, likemaster plans and procedural documents. Happily we cannow start reporting on the actual projects that were theproduct of much deliberation and paperwork.VETERANS MEMORIAL FUND: One capital project we areespecially proud to pursue is a new Veterans Memorial. Tobe located in the northeast corner of Memorial Park, theproject will give a more fitting tribute to all veterans; Past,Present, and Future. Conceived as a grassroots endeavor, nearly all construction cost is being raised through aVeterans Memorial Fund campaign. Donations of allamounts are gladly accepted; however, there are severalsuggested levels of support; each with equivalent recognition.Donors who give $100 or more can have a brickinscribed with the name of a veteran of their choosing. The fund also accepts in-kind donations of constructionmaterials and services that match construction specifications. Those who wish to participate can find a brightlycolored pamphlet with a donation form at the ParkDistrict offices, the Village of La Grange Park, La GrangePark Library and several local businesses. The pamphlet isalso available on the Park District website, www.cpdlgp.org. In order that the new memorial is completed in timefor a May 26, 2014 dedication, we ask that all donations bemade prior to December 31, 2013.BEACH-OAK PARK EXPANSION: This capital project wasinitiated last year when the Park District applied for a$150,200 grant from the Illinois Department of NaturalResources (IDNR) and the federally funded Land and WaterConservation Fund (LWCF). Happily, the grant request wasapproved and the Park District is now preparing to closethe purchase of 534 Beach Avenue, which is expected priorto the end of the year. Immediately upon closing, the buildingswill be demolished and the empty lot will be gradedand seeded in preparation for a future development project. The Park District plans to apply for an IDNR grant in2015 that will remodel the entire Beach-Oak Park in 2016. Aconceptual plan of improvements can be found on the ParkDistrict website. The web-route is: About/Master Plan/Section 4.MEMORIAL PARK IMPROVEMENT: Memorial Park is ourflagship park and plans are underway to offer new recreationopportunities. The first step toward completion wassubmitting an IDNR grant request for $400,000, whichoccurred on July 1, 2013. We anticipate the Governormaking an announcement of grant recipients sometime inMay, 2014, which if awarded pay for 50% of the project’sestimated cost. If the Community Park District is amongthose funded, construction could start as early as the fall,2014 and be complete in time for summer vacation 2015.New park amenities would include a new 60 seat capacityshelter equipped with energy saving indoor restrooms,a sand/water playground with accompanying splash pad, bags and bocce ball courts and two new playground piecesadded to the existing playground. The grant would alsohelp pay for improvements in the southwest corner of thepark that would accommodate small fairs and festivals.Thank you for choosing to make the Community ParkDistrict an active part of your household. We think thechoices of being presented in this publication will measureup to your expectation. On behalf of my fellow Park BoardCommissioners, we wish you and your family a fun-filledfall season.Lou RittenPresidentResident Registration Form is located on page 34 33
