This issue of the RECREATOR is the fall 

program showcase of all the varied 

classes and events we will facilitate for 

the remainder of 2009. While the RECREATOR 

is indeed the City’s program booklet, it also 

describes one who chooses to participate in socially 

acceptable activities to derive benefits. I 

have discussed in my messages, over the years, 

the various benefits that can be gained from 

recreating, along with the fact that the benefits 

are, indeed, ENDLESS. A realistic take many park and recreation professionals 

have on the word RECREATE is RE-CREATE. This is, after all, a most 

descriptive use of the word, and it also hits home with this edition’s theme: 

RE-DISCOVER the BENEFITS OF PARKS & RECREATION. 

What new challenge have you thought to take? Did you master Tai-Chi? 

The next level belt in Karate? The bidding process in bridge? Volunteer at 

Gumbo Limbo to teach a class? Wasn’t going to that next play at the Sugar 

Sand Willow Theater on your “to do” list? 

Take that next step to RE- DISCOVER a benefit you haven’t yet received. 

You’ll probably be surprised. 

This is somewhat ironic, as staff look at the fall as a new beginning. The 

recreation programs take on new sessions in September, and the City 

budget cycle begins anew in October. It gets to be confusing, with the 

2009 year ending for some, and the budget and program life of Recreation 

Services being the beginning of a new year. Like staff starting over with 

budget and program years, the thought of new challenges can be yours.

School Board, has developed community schools to serve the residents 

of the Greater Boca Raton area. The Community Schools offer a wide 

variety of indoor and outdoor leisure programs for all age groups. Meeting

Session 1 Learn Landscape Design Techniques Used by Professionals: 

Take some photos (optional) of one area of your front or back yard and 

bring them to class. At the end of the 3rd class, you will take home some 

great ideas, a landscape design specifically for you and a Plan of Action. 

Class also includes plant selection (sun,shade,Florida-friendly, and easy 

care). 

Session 2 When Your Garden Misbehaves: Have the bugs flourishing in 

your garden invited their “extended families”? Is your grass giving you attitude? 

Would seeing the variety of fascinating weeds on your property be 

a good “field trip” for budding horticulture students? Any answer close to

on holiday cooking and baking---inexpensive, yet elegant dishes and 

baked goods. Forget the Honey Baked Ham, we’ll teach you how to make 

one better! Learn to make Cornish Hens, chocolate truffles, sweet potato 

soufflé, fresh cranberry sauce, potato pancakes, Tzimmes, chocolate ganache, 

colorful dishes and more! Whether you’re entertaining at home, 

invited to an office party or a “special gathering”, we’ll help get you ready

ACTING – SHOWCASE THEATER CLASS 

This is an on-your-feet class with students (must be over 18) learning the 

skills of acting and/or musical theater while having fun and building confidence. 

Students will learn about characterization, projection, timing, stage 

movement, and stage production. The 2½ hour class includes instruction 

in a selected topic, rehearsing scenes and monologues, and performing 

for the group. A public performance will be scheduled for early December

color, form and understanding of making a better painting through 

the unique abilities of a teacher who has been re-inventing it all for over 20

This is an intensive four-hour, interactive session offering strategic job 

search techniques presented by two highly experienced corporate recruiting 

professionals with a collective 50+ years of experience in a wide variety

down into eleven modules containing the essential elements of successful 

job search with examples of internet resources, effective marketing tools, 

resumes and cover letters and advice on how to overcome obstacles. Participants

DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES 

PUPPY KINDERGARTEN 

For all puppies 10 weeks up to 5 months. Get your pup off to a great start 

with puppy playtime for socialization while learning the basics of how to 

raise a well-behaved dog. Class includes housebreaking, discouraging 

play biting, chewing and leash pulling using gentle methods. Training is 

indoors. PROOF OF VACCINATIONS must be brought to the first class. 

Please bring chew bones or non-squeak toys and soft treats each week.

is on developing a relationship of trust and obedience using positive 

reinforcement. Health care and safety tips are also discussed. A must for

A trained dog is a happy dog and a happy owner! This class is designed 

to challenge and fine –tune what you have learned from basic training. 

Strengthen your dog’s ability to respond to your commands while being 

distracted. Classes include games, prizes and an introduction to AGILITY. 

Come and have fun while spending quality time with your canine companion.

DOG PARK ETIQUETTE 

Would you enjoy taking your dog to the dog park but aren’t sure 

how he or she may react? Learn the warning signs and how you 

may be encouraging inappropriate behavior from your dog and 

other pets. Class will teach you how to deal with dominance and 

inappropriate behaviors while your dog socializes using the “Dog 

Whisperer” techniques. (This class is not for dogs that are extremely

CHILDREN’S CLASSES 

YOUTH ARCHERY Ages 8-14 

Looking for something different for your children to do? Archery is a sport 

most people fail to consider when looking for that alternative to soccer 

and baseball. This program will introduce your child to the Olympic sport 

of archery through skill development and paper target practice. Participants 

will become proficient in range safety, proper shooting form, and 

scoring. The program is taught by a certified instructor utilizing a national 

curriculum designed by the National Field Archery Association. Participants 

will have the opportunity to earn skill level patches and pins, showing 

that they have mastered vital skills. Archery allows children of all ages 

and abilities to participate in a non-competitive atmosphere that builds 

discipline, technique and a sense of accomplishment.

A DAY OF YOGA FUN AND GAMES Ages 7+ 

Life has become a little too serious for the 7 and older crowd and they have 

missed the days when everything seemed like a game. This workshop will

Participants will play yoga games such as breathing snake, yoga charades, 

1,2,3, yogi says, etc., and a meditation game. Workshops will end with a 

guided visualization and foot massage; children will leave with a game list 

and a complete summary

The Junior Chef’s classes are designed to help you learn how to be creative

present food. During this six-week session, we will be making an array of 

pizzas, pasta dishes, warm chocolate vinaigrette salads, paninis, holiday

BATON TWIRLING, POM POMS and 

TUMBLING with STAR-LITE EXPRESS 

This exciting program is designed to enhance self-esteem, character, coordination

and special events. Intermediate and advanced levels march annually in

ME and MOMMY YOGA 

This blend of movement, music and yoga is a 45-minute class open to

TOUR OF BOCA 

BOCA RATON BICYCLE CLUB 

Come join the fun with the annual Tour of Boca rides hosted by the 

Boca Raton Bicycle Club and the Recreation Services Department. 

Tour beautiful Boca Raton with an easy paced, police escorted 

bicycle ride beginning at Patch Reef Park on Yamato Road (just 

west of Military Trail). Boca Raton Bicycle Club members acting as 

marshals help beginners feel comfortable on the open road and 

give advice to improve cycling skills. Promote safe cycling while 

spending a pleasant afternoon with family and friends.

Jamaican artist Vaughn Tucker has received many awards 

and has been commissioned to do paintings for several high 

profile Jamaican corporations. He was a silver medalist in the 

National Festival Fine Arts Competition.

Kinderdance is a developmental dance and fitness program, blended with

BABY SIGNS® PARENT WORKSHOP 

Join the thousands of families who have already discovered the magic of 

communicating with their pre-verbal babies before they can talk! This parent/child 

workshop is a hands-on specially designed for parents/caregivers 

and their children from birth to 24 months. Each 45-minute session 

will teach you how to implement the Baby Signs® program at home and 

you will have a chance to practice with your child in class. There is a materials 

fee for the workshop (payable to the instructor at any time prior to 

the start of class) includes a Parent Kit with DVDs, a signs dictionary, a flip 

chart, and a parent guide. Both parent and their child are welcome in this

PLAYBALL 

Playball is a unique and original sports and life-skills development program 

developed in the early 1980’s for both boys and girls. Classes are 

age specific, limited in size, and are non-competitive in nature. Kids love 

coming to classes because they are fun, but behind every activity taught 

is a lot of educational and developmental science. Playball covers a wide 

variety of sports skills including soccer, basketball, hockey, tennis, baseball 

and volleyball. Registration is on a “first come basis” only.

October-Gold Coast Quilters 

The Guild, a member of the Sunshine State Quilters Association, meets

FIELD HOUSE SCHEDULING INFORMATION 

Open play schedule for basketball and volleyball 

will be posted on the 3rd Monday of the 

prior month. All Open Play programs 

are free to residents of the Greater Boca 

Raton Beach & Park District and the 

City of Boca Raton. Proof of residency 

is required. The weekly open play 

schedule can be obtained by calling

NOTE: The Sugar Sand Park Field House will be closed from Thursday,

New class for moms to work their core muscles using stability balls, bands

Food has provided a perfect metaphor in many classic and contemporary 

international films. Like a great dish, it takes a complex recipe and mastery 

of ingredients to bring a memorable film to the screen. Join Shelly Isaacs, 

founder and host of Café Cinematheque International, when he presents 

a survey of classic foreign cinema exploring the relationship of food and 

film. Each session will feature a screening of an award winning film accompanied 

by a discussion of major concepts exploring the social, economic, 

aesthetic and historical implications, as well as production techniques.

Young Artist Program Ages 3-9 yrs 

Picasso’s Children is an inspiring first introduction to art appreciation for 

young children. Our young artist program is the foundation for a lifetime 

love of fine art and for appreciating the world through an artist’s perspective. 

First, children are inspired like a master! In each class, we learn about 

a master artist in a fresh and fun new way. In a typical day we play interactive 

games, such as “I Spy” with a masterpiece! We make artwork relatable 

in a way where children innately “get it.” What was the weather like in this 

painting? Why were they wearing those clothes? Let’s enjoy the artist’s favorite 

snack! Next, it’s time for our young artists to create! Children work 

on age-appropriate projects in “the style” of the master they just learned 

about, and are encouraged to express themselves and feel free and comfortable.

Tellabration 

A Worldwide Celebration of Storytelling 

Come enjoy an evening of stories for adult audiences guaranteed to engage 

the imagination, touch the heart and open the mind. For the fifth 

year, local and regional storytellers will celebrate the international storytelling 

event known as Tellabration at the Willow Theater with a performance 

of traditional and real-life stories. Tellabration is sponsored by 

the Palm Beach County Storytelling Guild, in conjunction with the South 

Florida Storytelling Project at Florida Atlantic university.

Years of being a passionate resident of Greenwich Village have given 

Regina Ress a sharp eye for New York character, place, and history. From 

the Bronx to Battery Park, you¹ll relive the sights and sounds of America¹s 

most exciting city in her engaging, true--life tales. Regina Ress is an awardwinning 

storyteller, educator and writer who teaches storytelling at New 

York university. She has performed and taught for 40 years in the uS and 

abroad, in venues as diverse as prisons and homeless centers, Broadway, 

Carnegie Hall and the White House.

Join us for our telescope nights! These free, informal events are held

We’ll explore the skies with our professional-grade 16-inch Meade LX 

Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. 

All children under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. 

No registration required – just show up! The telescope will be out for 

at least one hour after the scheduled start time. Note: Stars must be 

visible for the telescope to align.

may obtain a Parking Permit at no charge at any one of the City’s Community 

Centers. Proof of residency and vehicle ownership required. (See

Non-residents: Annual Permits: $265 per vehicle 

Monthly Permits: $25 per month/per vehicle 

Dog owners are responsible for, and liable with respect to, the actions of their dogs and any damage or injury to person or property caused by same. 

Dogs and/or their owners who violate these rules are subject to removal from the park and possible suspension of the right to utilize the park. The City 

of Boca Raton reserves the right to refuse entry to dogs and/or their owners into Mizner Bark for the reasons of health, safety, and prior offenses or for the 

comfort of all patrons and/or their pets. 

Patrons of the park who engage in activities (i.e., playing ball, using remote controlled toys, etc.) not related to the dog park’s purpose or who violate any 

other guideline are liable for any damage or injury to persons, dogs, or property 

GUIDELINES FOR USE 

• Be polite. Scoop up the poop! Bag stations and trashcans are available throughout the dog park. 

• Remain in the dog park and in full view of your dog at all times. 

• Leash your dog prior to entering and upon leaving the dog park. 

• Aggressive behavior must be addressed immediately. Either move your dog to another part of the park or leave the park. 

• For safety reasons, children must be at least 4 feet tall and supervised by an adult to use the dog park. Children must behave in a 

responsible manner: no running, chasing dogs, or petting dogs without the owner’s permission. 

• No more than two dogs per person on any one visit. 

• Dog toys, leashes, etc. left in the park will be disposed of at the end of the day. The City accepts no responsibility or liability for 

such items. 

• Female dogs in heat or sick dogs cannot be brought into the park. 

• Dogs should be under voice control (i.e., come when called). 

• Dogs must be vaccinated and display current licenses on their collars. 

• Puppies under four (4) months of age are prohibited. 

• Spayed/neutered animals are recommended. 

• No food, treats, alcoholic beverages (soft drinks and water are allowed), strollers, bicycles, or children’s toys are allowed in the dog 

park. This is a recreation park for dogs accompanied by their owners. 

• Playing catch (i.e., football, baseball, etc.) or using remote controlled toys, which can cause harm to the dogs in the park, is not 

allowed. 

• Choke, prong, pinch, and spike collars must be removed inside park area. 

• Professional dog trainers are not permitted to use this facility for training. 

• Persons in violation of these rules may be required to leave the dog park. 

• Use of this facility shall be for a dog park; any other use is prohibited. 

• All incidents and injuries must be reported to the Recreation Services Department by calling (561) 393-7810 weekdays; 8:00am

Gumbo Limbo Nature Center is a distinctive part of the city’s parks system. 

The Center is surrounded by a rare remnant of coastal hammock, located 

on Boca Raton’s barrier island. A boardwalk provides access to this unique 

tropical forest. From a 40-foot observation tower, view Gumbo Limbo 

trees, migrating birds, Indian middens, the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. 

Outdoor saltwater tanks provide habitats for sea turtles, sharks 

and other marine life. An informal garden attracts butterflies throughout 

the year. Indoor displays feature wildlife indigenous to South Florida and a 

panorama of stained glass windows depicting the coastal island as it may 

have appeared in the 1500’s. Florida Atlantic university maintains an onsite 

marine biology research laboratory. A gallery above the lab allows 

the public to see projects conducted by university scientists. Visit our gift 

shop for educational and fun nature books, toys, puzzles, t-shirts, jewelry

Rain Barrel Workshop 

Looking for relief? How about a lower water bill, freedom from water 

restrictions, and that environmentally conscious gold star you’ve 

always wanted? Reintroducing… rain barrels. The ancient idea of 

harvesting rainwater for dry seasons is gaining popularity with tightening 

water restrictions statewide. Learn about this water catchment 

system designed to collect and store the rainwater that is normally diverted 

to storm drains, lost to evaporation, or restricted to a localized 

area. It is estimated that a rain barrel can save ~1,300 gallons of free 

water during summer months that can be used for a variety of purposes, 

from watering gardens and landscaping to washing your pets

Volunteer Training Ages 14 – adult 

Have you ever considered taking an active part in a nature center? Volunteering 

at Gumbo Limbo will give you the opportunity to become knowledgeable 

about a variety of nature indigenous to south Florida, while interacting 

with visitors from around the world. We offer a variety of classes 

for volunteers to learn more about the coastal island, hardwood hammock, 

and sea turtle conservation. The gift store is looking for volunteers 

who enjoy retail and have experience with computers. Volunteers with 

carpentry skills are needed to assist with boardwalk repairs. Volunteers 

are required to attend two 3-hour training sessions. A fee of $25 covers

Wetlands Walk 

Ages 7 & up with adult participation. Wakodahatchee is a man-made 

wetland which has become a favorite for birders and photographers.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS 

Man-of-War 

What is it? Man-of-War are most prevalent during the months of 

November through April. When the Man-of-War present a hazard to 

the public, the purple flag will be flying from the lifeguard towers. 

Man-of-War on the beach are also dangerous and capable of stinging; 

therefore, they should be avoided. 

Symptoms: Extreme pain from the Man-of-War sting usually lasts 

from 1-3 hours. Serious symptoms from a sting could be any combination 

of the following: tightness in the chest, respiratory difficulty, 

stomach cramps, vomiting, allergic reaction or severe pain. Those 

who suffer any of these symptoms should seek immediate 

medical attention. 

Treatment: Any Man-of-War sting should be treated by an ocean 

lifeguard, who will apply a solution to the affected area. It is very 

important that the victim use the callous portion of the fingertips to 

peel off tentacles. Do not rub the affected area.

taped to windshield glass or placed on paper or transparencies. 

A ONE-DAY visit will require the boater to obtain a daily permit at one of the above locations prior to launching water-craft. Permit must be placed in the 

lower left-hand corner on the dashboard, visible for review. A ONE-DAY visitor permit expires 24 hours after issuance.

HOW TO OBTAIN PERMIT: 

Applicants are required to provide a document from both #1 & 2: 

1. Present their official state motor vehicle registration, or title, or current bill of sale, or rental/lease agreement (with applicant’s name) for each vehicle. 

2. Prove residency in Palm Beach County by providing one of the following current documents showing resident’s name and Palm Beach County 

address: current driver’s license, city/county tax bill, unpaid telephone bill, water deposit receipt, Florida power/light bill, rental or lease agreement, 

notarized letter from condo association. 

3. university students and faculty residing on campus in Palm Beach County may establish proof of residency by submitting a signed letter by the Director 

of Housing, certifying campus residency. 

Field Rental Fees 

The following fees will be charged for issuing a permit for any adult group requesting useage of an athletic field owned by the City of Boca Raton. 

Fees and inventory of fields available for rental subject to change. 


• Baseball/Softball Field $20 per hour $110 per hour 

• Soccer/Football Field $25 per hour $140 per hour 

• Basketball Courts(Woodlands Park) 

Volleyball Courts(Meadows Park – Sand Court): $13 per hour $70 per hour 

• Batting Cage $10.25 per hour $30.75 per hour 

For miscellaneous additional services (drag, line, paint fields), please call for rates. 

1.For up to 2 uses per month,permit will be based on single person residency status. 

2.Game, league, tournament, multiple or continuous usage residency status will be determined by roster submitted with residency being based on 66% 

3.Refunds will be made for permits cancelled by the Athletics Department due to inclement weather causing field closure prior to reserved time. 

4.Resident– Resides in the City of Boca Raton or Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District.
