Annual report 2009 47Description:The laboratory is oriented towards support of teaching modelling, simulation and control, using mainly Matlab and Simuling with varioustoolboxes for intelligent control, life fuzzy, neural and evolutionarytoolboxes. It provides advanced research and education programin development of novel approaches and their applications in modelling, simulation and control of continuous-time, discrete-time, discreteevents and hybrid systems. The education is adapted to thecurrent demand of the industries in Slovakia (power industry, gas andcar industries, health care, banking) and aims to training specialists tobe able to cope with today’s problems and to design appropriate solutions.Various basic and applied research projects dealing with challenginginterdisciplinary problems are solved in this laboratory.Grid Computing LaboratoryManager: L. HudecContact:ladislav.hudec@stuba.skDescription: The research and teaching laboratory is devoted to teaching distributedprocessing and parallel programming graduate modules and experimentallab for project on Grid Computing and its components.Grid consists of two independent parts. The first part is testing gridequipped 20 CPUs, 1Gb network interconnection, front-end serverwith UPS and Globus Toolkit software. The second part is productiongrid equipped 40 CPUs, 1Gb network connection, front-end serverwith UPS and Globus Toolkit software. Grid is connected to Internetand is going to be as a part of SlovakGrid national grid structure.7.5 Research ProjectsStudy of Co-evolution between Genes and Memes using Artificial Life Methods andReplicator Theory (VEGA, 1/0804/08)Project leader: V. KvasničkaMembers:Supported by:J. Pospíchal, Š. Babinec, J. Laca, P. Lacko, P. TrebatickýScientific Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education of Slovak Republicand the Slovak Academy of SciencesDuration: January 2008 – December 2010Description:Evolutionary methods of artificial life and replicator theory will beused to study co-evolution between genes and memes. A populationwill be composed of complexes built from one gene and one meme:the complex will be called an m-gene. The propagation of m-genes inthe population will be based on following three elementary operations:replication (m-gene is replicated onto another m-gene − a descendent, which may contains a mutated version of the parental m-gene; interaction (a memetic transfer from a donor to an acceptor) andextinction (m-gene is eliminated out of the population. By computationalsimulations “in silico” we shall study a co-evolution betweenmemes and genes and identify various mechanisms of evolution ofmemes in population. The results of this study will enable to identify
