NCEM is based <strong>in</strong> St Margaret’s Church, York,<br />

which is also home to the York Early Music Festival<br />

and the Beverley and East Rid<strong>in</strong>g Early Music<br />

Festival. The Centre presents many jazz, folk<br />

and world <strong>music</strong>ians with<strong>in</strong> its <strong>World</strong> Sounds<br />

programme and curates a number of themed<br />

festivals and seasons of work, such as The African<br />

Music Festival Weekend <strong>in</strong> 2005 which <strong>in</strong>cluded<br />

the Tuareg group, Ensemble Tartit. York has a<br />

sizeable Ch<strong>in</strong>ese population and the NCEM<br />

produces a Ch<strong>in</strong>ese New Year event which is also<br />

funded by the urban regeneration programme of<br />

the city council.<br />

SAA-uk was founded <strong>in</strong> 1997 with the help of the<br />

Leeds College of Music and National Lottery<br />

fund<strong>in</strong>g. It works with a number of artforms with<br />

the focus on <strong>music</strong> (from throughout the Asian<br />

subcont<strong>in</strong>ent and hybrid British-Asian artforms). Its<br />

activities <strong>in</strong>clude residencies for <strong>music</strong>ians from<br />

India, schools and community workshops,<br />

performances and outreach work. Its Raga Muff<strong>in</strong>s<br />

Project is aimed at 8 to 18-year-olds and creates<br />

open access opportunities for young people to<br />

engage <strong>in</strong> South Asian <strong>music</strong>-mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the school<br />

holidays, through <strong>in</strong>tensive <strong>music</strong>al residencies, led<br />

by experienced Asian classical <strong>music</strong>ians <strong>in</strong> sitar,<br />

santoor, tabla and voice. It is a member of the<br />

South Asian Music Consortium (see National<br />

tour<strong>in</strong>g consortia <strong>in</strong> this section).<br />
