Ch<strong>in</strong>a People Promotions (CPP) was formed <strong>in</strong><br />
1994 by a group of Ch<strong>in</strong>ese <strong>music</strong>ians. They<br />
promote Ch<strong>in</strong>ese arts and culture through<br />
concerts, festivals, workshops and <strong>music</strong><br />
production work with<strong>in</strong> the UK and Europe.<br />

Leicester's ma<strong>in</strong> venue for concerts, the De<br />
Montfort Hall (capacity 1,600 seated, 2,200<br />
stand<strong>in</strong>g) also hosts a wide range of world <strong>music</strong>,<br />
jazz and roots events. It also has an outdoor<br />
amphitheatre (see Summer Sundae, Festivals: East<br />
Midlands). Recent artists <strong>in</strong>clude Kate Rusby and<br />
the African Soul Rebels UK Tour (Daara J,<br />
T<strong>in</strong>ariwen and Rachid Taha).<br />

Lakeside is <strong>part</strong> of the University of Nott<strong>in</strong>gham,<br />
and is based <strong>in</strong> Highfields Park. It offers a range of<br />
diverse events <strong>in</strong> all genres. Its <strong>music</strong> programme<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes children’s events, classical, world, roots<br />
and jazz shows <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g (recently) Tord Gustavsen’s<br />
Trio (Norway), Swåp (Sweden/UK) and Malaysian<br />
composer Sunetra Fernando. It will be the host for<br />
the 2006 Modal meet<strong>in</strong>g (see Support bodies).<br />

The Lift Global Music Club is a non-profit-mak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
organisation run by local volunteers, which<br />
presents multicultural <strong>music</strong> from around the<br />
world, and offers workshops <strong>in</strong> schools and at<br />
festivals. Its Global Music Festival 2005 presented<br />
Mamadou Cissoko from southern Senegal and<br />
guitarist Mart<strong>in</strong> Simpson.<br />
Long Journey Home<br />

Long Journey Home began as a region-wide<br />
festival <strong>in</strong> 2002 and has become a network that<br />
works with artists <strong>in</strong> exile and those communities<br />
that have recently arrived <strong>in</strong> the UK, from all over<br />
the world, as refugees and asylum seekers. It has<br />
regular group meet<strong>in</strong>gs and recitals <strong>in</strong><br />
Nott<strong>in</strong>gham, Derby and Leicester and <strong>in</strong>volves<br />
artists from places such as Kurdistan, Iran, the<br />
Congo, Angola, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe and the<br />
Czech Republic. It organises celebratory <strong>music</strong><br />
events to mark National Refugee Week and offers<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, mentor<strong>in</strong>g, professional development<br />
and other support.<br />
