<strong>World</strong> Circuit Records have established their<br />

reputation by produc<strong>in</strong>g some of the f<strong>in</strong>est<br />

world <strong>music</strong> albums of the past two decades,<br />

specialis<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>music</strong> from Cuba and West Africa.<br />

The label is best known for the GRAMMY<br />

w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Buena Vista Social Club album (1997),<br />

which is the biggest-sell<strong>in</strong>g world <strong>music</strong> album of<br />

all time, and led to the phenomenal rise <strong>in</strong> the<br />

popularity of Cuban <strong>music</strong>. The Buena Vista<br />

series cont<strong>in</strong>ues with solo albums from the<br />

GRAMMY w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g Ibrahim Ferrer, Omara<br />

Portuondo, Cachaíto López, Rubén González,<br />

Guajiro Mirabal, and the <strong>in</strong>novative new album<br />

from Angá Díaz.<br />

<strong>World</strong> Circuit's African artists enjoy equal<br />

prestige. Ali Farka Touré's GRAMMY w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Talk<strong>in</strong>g Timbuktu album (1994) recorded with Ry<br />

Cooder brought the label <strong>in</strong>ternational acclaim,<br />

while other <strong>World</strong> Circuit artists such as Malian<br />

diva Oumou Sangare, the legendary Orchestra<br />

Baobab and <strong>music</strong>al maverick Cheikh Lô from<br />

Senegal have all emerged as major stars at home<br />

<strong>in</strong> Africa and around the globe. With their latest<br />

pair<strong>in</strong>g of kora virtuoso Toumani Diabaté and Ali<br />

Farka Touré, <strong>World</strong> Circuit cont<strong>in</strong>ues to set a<br />

high standard. No sign<strong>in</strong>gs have come from<br />

unsolicited demos.<br />
