CHARITY 288good. They that do good from obedience take the lead in acts ofbenevolence, such as giving to the poor, assisting the needy, andendowing temples and hospitals. And they cannot but place meritin these things; nor do they understand the Word otherwise, whereit says that they shall have their reward. They do not know that theaffection of good itself with its delights, is itself the reward.211. The affection of love is as a flame, from which there is lightin truths. The cause of it is that the Lord flows into man’s affectionand gives light. In the spiritual world also love from a distanceappears as a flame; sometimes as if flames were descending fromheaven, which are affections of good and truth so appearing. It is asone who honors a king, a magistrate, and governor, according tothe laws of subordination, and so others, and at the same time doesnot inwardly love him. He loves him who sees the good in him.12 33There is no church where there is no truth of faith; and noreligion where there is no good of life212. The church and religion make one like truth and good. Andas truth is of faith, and good is of charity, they make one like faithand charity; or, that it may be more clearly understood, they makeone like the understanding and the will. It is known that a manmay understand well and yet not will well; and that he canunderstand truths, and from understanding speak them, and yetnot from willing do them. But when he wills as he understands, and does as he says, thenthe will and the understanding make one in him. So it is with thechurch and religion. The church is a church from its doctrine; andreligion is religion from life according to doctrine. And the doctrinemust be of truths, and the life must be of goods.33. In the photolithograph, propositions 12, 4, and 3 are found at the end of themanuscript. 12 possibly belongs after n. 198 in proposition 11. [—Translator]
CHARITY 289213. But that these things may come into clearer light, they shallbe explained in the following order:(1) All the truths of faith in the church are from the Word.(2) The truths of faith which are from the Word teach what is to bebelieved, and what is to be done, that a man may be allotted eternallife.(3) The church is named from doctrine; and religion from a lifeaccording to doctrine.(4) With those who are in a faith separated from charity, both indoctrine, and life, there is neither a church nor religion.3 34214. The neighbor who is to be loved in the natural sense is thefellow citizen, a smaller and greater society, one’s native country, and the human race4215. The neighbor is to be loved according to his spiritual good, and thence according to his moral, civil, and natural good;consequently, the neighbor that is to be loved, in the spiritualsense, is good(1) Man is not man from the face and body, but from the good of hiswill.34. In the photolithograph 3 and 4 come in reverse order. [—Translator]
