This articledefines cloud computing and shows how it isdifferent from other types of computing. It alsodiscusses how cloud computing solutions couldbe beneficial to libraries with some liveexamples.IntroductionCloud computing represents one of the mostimportant technology trends of our time. Everyday we make use of computing and informationresources through a web browser powered bysome distant and diffuse infrastructure. In morerecent months and years cloud computing hasentered the library technology sphere. Cloudcomputing brings the opportunity for libraries toshift away from the need to own and operatetheir own servers to power their core automationapplications and through web-based services.“Cloud computing” is not a precise term, withvarious definitions given; some examples:According to Wikipedia: “Cloud computing isinternet-based computing, whereby sharedresources, software, and information areprovided to computers and other devices ondemand, like the electricity grid.”VMware, a company involved in providingsoftware and services, offers a more businessorienteddefinition: “Cloud computing is a newapproach that reduces IT complexity byleveraging the efficient polling of on-demand,self-managed virtual infrastructure, consumed asa service.”The term ‘cloud’ is used to indicate the whole ofcomputing services accessible via the Internet. Itis an all-encompassing description of thecomplex internet connected networks that existin datacenters all over the world that powerservices and applications behind the scenes.
