Annual, InternationalConference(s)More Than 1,400 Attend <strong>SCUP</strong>–43 inMontréal, CanadaThe final tally on attendance to <strong>SCUP</strong>–43 was 1,437,making the Montréal-based annual, internationalconference <strong>and</strong> idea marketplace the fourth largestin <strong>SCUP</strong>’shistory. Thelargest annualconferenceremainsChicago, IL,in 2007 with1,557; thesecond largestwas Boston,MA, in 2001with 1,461, <strong>and</strong>the third largest was Washington, DC in 2006 with 1,452.Following the event, nearly 300 attendees completedan online evaluation <strong>for</strong>m. Ninety-five percent of themreported satisfaction with the event.This was the second <strong>SCUP</strong> annualconference to be held in a conventioncenter instead of a hotel <strong>and</strong> to usebuses. Buses were used in Honoluluat The Campus of the Future jointconference in 2006. <strong>SCUP</strong>–44 <strong>and</strong><strong>SCUP</strong>–45 in Portl<strong>and</strong>, OR, <strong>and</strong>Minneapolis, MN, respectively, alsowill be held in convention centers. Here is a summary of their decisions <strong>and</strong>actions:• Jim Murdock, <strong>SCUP</strong> secretary-treasurer provideda financial overview <strong>and</strong> presented the FY08–09operating budget <strong>for</strong> the board’s approval. Thefinancial statements <strong>and</strong> budget will be reported inthe <strong>SCUP</strong> Annual Report to Members, which will bepublished in October.• Leslie Louden, vice chair of the <strong>SCUP</strong> MembershipCommittee <strong>and</strong> chair of the <strong>SCUP</strong> VolunteerismTask Force, reported on the task <strong>for</strong>ce’s final list ofrecommendations to improve <strong>member</strong>s’ volunteerexperiences. The recommendations include providingvolunteers with job descriptions with clearly definedexpectations <strong>and</strong> time requirements, the need <strong>for</strong>orientation or training <strong>for</strong> certain positions, <strong>and</strong> theneed <strong>for</strong> a recognition program. The board then askedthe <strong>SCUP</strong> staff to review the recommendations <strong>and</strong>report in October on how to implement them.• The board approved a request by the <strong>SCUP</strong>Membership Committee <strong>for</strong> a new institutional groupto serve professionals working <strong>for</strong> federal, state, <strong>and</strong>local governments, foundations, accrediting agencies,non-profits <strong>and</strong> not-<strong>for</strong>-profits. “Group G” will beavailable October 1.• The board approved a request by the <strong>SCUP</strong> AwardsCommittee <strong>for</strong> a new bestowed award, titled “<strong>SCUP</strong>Award <strong>for</strong> Institutional Innovation <strong>and</strong> Integration.”Nominees will be required to include, among othercriteria, an external endorsement such as a letter ofrecommendation from an outside institution. Theaward will be given in July 2009.• Jaime Garrido reported on the activities of the <strong>SCUP</strong>Nominations <strong>and</strong> Elections Task Force, which seeksto find ways to identify <strong>and</strong> develop future volunteerleaders <strong>for</strong> <strong>SCUP</strong>.• The board approved an eight percent increase in dues<strong>for</strong> July 2009 <strong>for</strong> most <strong>member</strong>ship categories exceptstudent <strong>and</strong> retirees.• Alex Roe reported on the activities of the <strong>SCUP</strong>Volunteer Recognition Task Force.• A task <strong>for</strong>ce was <strong>for</strong>med to examine <strong>SCUP</strong>’s role in<strong>SCUP</strong> Member News 7 August 2008

October 1: <strong>SCUP</strong> Offers New GroupMembership <strong>for</strong> Government,Foundation, Accreditation, Non-Profit,<strong>and</strong> Not-<strong>for</strong>-ProfitsBeginning October 1, which is the beginning of <strong>SCUP</strong>’sfiscal year, a new institutional group <strong>member</strong>ship will beoffered <strong>for</strong> use by federal, state, <strong>and</strong> local governmentoffices <strong>and</strong> agencies, foundations, museums, accreditingagencies, non-profit associations, <strong>and</strong> not-<strong>for</strong>-profitorganizations.The <strong>SCUP</strong> board approved the new group at their meetingin July.The intention of the new group, which was <strong>for</strong>med basedon feedback from <strong>member</strong>s from several organizations, isto provide a type of <strong>member</strong>ship <strong>for</strong> entities that are notcolleges <strong>and</strong> universities but not <strong>for</strong>-profit either.The dues <strong>and</strong> number of <strong>member</strong>ships provided <strong>for</strong> thenew “Group G” will be the same as a Group A <strong>and</strong> a smallcorporate group ($700/three <strong>member</strong>s). Group Gs also willbe allowed to add <strong>member</strong>s <strong>for</strong> a lower price than regularindividual <strong>member</strong>ship.Maximums Removed From GroupsEffective October 1, institutional <strong>and</strong> corporate groupswill be allowed to add on as many <strong>member</strong>s from theirorganizations as they wish. The <strong>SCUP</strong> MembershipCommittee voted to remove the “maximum number of<strong>member</strong>s” clause in all group dues definitions in earlySeptember.Group dues will still provide a pre-defined number of<strong>member</strong>s. This issue focuses on key questionsabout student lifestyle, influence of technology, <strong>and</strong> theimpact on a learning experience design perspective. Inaddition, the fall 08 issue (October – December) willcontain: A Tribute to Achievement <strong>and</strong> Excellence, the<strong>SCUP</strong> annual awards <strong>for</strong> individuals, as well as, awards<strong>for</strong> excellence in campus planning, l<strong>and</strong>scape, <strong>and</strong>architecture. In the winter 09 issue (January – March), thefocus will be on student related programs <strong>and</strong> facilities.The journal investigates how higher education institutionsare responding to these changes. Also, the winter issuewill include current <strong>SCUP</strong> Trends.Regional NewsThe Southern <strong>and</strong> North Central regions have been busyfinalizing the details <strong>for</strong> their regional conferences comingup in October <strong>and</strong> November.
