Administrators, Staff SchoolLaw Enforcement OfficersBy Sgt. Douglas J. “D.J.” Hedrick, Troop AIn October 2011, a group of PlatteCounty R-3 School District administratorsand staff played a game ofbasketball. Their opponent consistedof local law enforcement officers, andthe game took place at the Platte CityMiddle School in Platte City, MO. Thegame served as a way to raise moneyfor the Platte County Education Foundation(student scholarship fund) and“Shop With A Cop”. A total of $341 wasraised for the two causes.It was evident from the start thatthe school’s team had prior playingexperience–they quickly jumped toa 20 to 7 lead. We learned later thatone staff member held the record forthe most free throws made and freethrows attempted in MIAA women’scollege basketball. In fact, several staffmembers had played collegiate basketball.There were some highlights forthe officers. Troop A’s “High flying”Corporal Carl A. Taibi’s “run andgun” enthusiasm brought severalcheers from the crowd. Carl threw upa half court shot because his teammateson the bench yelled, “Shoot!”Carl thought the clock was runningout. (There were five minutes left inthe half.) Trooper Matthew J. “Matt”Yoder–we like to call him “Hillbilly”–kept the quick pace going, while otherplayers were asking for a “sub” aboutevery other time down the court.The law enforcement team consistedof officers from the Missouri StateHighway Patrol (assigned to PlatteCounty), the Platte City Police Department,and the Platte County Sherriff’sDepartment. The Patrol members participatingincluded Tpr. Yoder, TrooperChadwick S. “Chad” Kutzner, Cpl.Taibi, and myself.Platte City Sergeant RobertNewan and Patrol Officer Matt Mc-Combs were able to bring this benefittogether. The basketball game willbenefit two valuable organizations. Sgt.Newman said the “Shop With A Cop”program allows area law enforcementto spend a few hours with local childrenwhile they enjoy picking out theirfavorite toys and games. This year’s“Shop With A Cop” event took place atthe local Wal-Mart on December 10,2011.The ending score was 74 to 35 infavor of the school district. What welearned that day: Next year, the officersneed to do their homework, sothey can be better prepared for thenext lesson!Platte County R-3 School District administrators and staff took on area law enforcement in a charity basketball game in October 2011.
